Nittany Lions Deliver Impressive Day 1 at Bison Outdoor Classic

Riolo, Sloff, Watson etch their names into program Top 10 records

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State concluded a busy first day at the Bison Outdoor Classic Saturday.

Three Nittany Lions modified the program Top 10 records, including two in the men’s 1500-meter run. Nick Sloff earned the fifth-fastest time in program history with a 3:39.56, beating the previous time by 0.01 seconds. Ryan Watson joined Sloff in rewriting the records, finishing at 3:40.35, the eighth-fastest time in program history.

The third program Top 10 came from Hannah Riolo, who won the women’s high jump with a 5-10.75 (1.80m). Her mark tied Erika Morgan for the seventh-best in program history. Riolo’s teammate Gwen Cudmore earned second place in the event, posting a 5-7.00 (1.70m).

EVENT SUMMARY

The day began with the men’s long jump, where Kyle Moore earned the gold at 23-8.75 (7.23m). Joe White also took third in the long jump at 23-5.25 (7.14m).

Moving to the throws, where Sasha Garnett earned the second victory for a Nittany Lion in Lewisburg when she won the women’s shot put. Her mark of 52-4.50 (15.96m) paced the field, while her teammate Skye Petrie-Cameron finished fifth at 46-10.25 (14.28m).  

On the track, a trio of Nittany Lions finished strong in the women’s 800-meter run. Ada Rand came in second with a 2:06.96, Sarah Pickering finished third at 2:07.30 and Lea Hatcher earned fifth at 2:08.44. All three marks are personal records as well.

The 800-meter successes extended into the men’s event, where Carter Fitzgerald took third, running a 1:49.11.

Katie Dallas topped the women’s 1500-meter run, clocking a personal record 4:23.37. Two other Nittany Lions delivered solid showings. Claire Zubey placed 20th at 4:29.95, with Allison Dougherty running a 4:34.71, good for 35th.  

Both 5000-meter runs saw a Penn State athlete record a personal best. The women’s event saw freshman Eva Kynaston outpace the field, taking the event with a personal best 16:20.00. In the men’s event, Brendan Flynn took fourth place at 14:09.48.  

UP NEXT

Penn State continues its time in Lewisburg when it returns for the second day of the Bison Outdoor Classic Sunday. The competition starts at 10:30 a.m., with the women’s hammer starting the events featuring a Nittany Lion at 11 a.m.
