Kitching, Campbell win events for Nittany Lions

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State track & field finished its third and final day at the Virginia Challenge Saturday. Several Nittany Lions brought home top three finishes, including two who won their events.  

Hayley Kitching continued a torrid start to her senior outdoor season, winning the women’s 800-meter run with a 2:02.65. The Coffs Harbour, Australia native earned her second win in as many days, having triumphed in the women’s 1500-meter invite Friday. Boh Ritchie continued Penn State’s success in the event by event, taking second at  2:07.03.

The men’s high jump invite ended with Trip Campbell standing atop the field, setting a personal record 7-0.25 (2.14m). The freshman topped seven feet for the first time in outdoor competition and second time overall. His teammate Robert Allen tied for eighth, jumping a 6-7.00 (2.01m).

EVENT SUMMARY

The day began with the women’s 100-meter hurdles, where sophomore Addyson White broke 15 seconds, running a 14.70. In the women’s 400-meter dash, Alexandria North ran a 55.38, good for 12th in a 72-athlete field.   

Moving to the men’s events, where three underclassmen continued their campaigns with noteworthy showings. Ajani Dwyer Ajani Dwyer brought home second place in the men’s 200m invite at 20.42w, Peyton Sommers placed fifth in the 400-meter dash at 47.11, while Matthew Sarnowski threw a tenth-place 167-5.00 (51.04m), a personal best.

A pair of Nittany Lions shined in the men’s pole vault as well. Mason Bucks earned third place with a personal-record 16-5.50 (5.02m), while Breckin Swope jumped 15-5.75 (4.72m).

In the women’s 4x400-meter run, the team of Ryleigh Hearn, Mimi Duffy, Marie-Éloïse LeClair and North ran a second-place showing at 3:40.23 in the final event for the Nittany Lions of the weekend.

UP NEXT

Penn State returns to Philadelphia to compete in the 130th Penn Relays. The three-day meet begins Thursday, April 23 and concludes Saturday, April 25.
