Penn State Women’s Basketball Inks Irene García

Wright adds Irene García to her 2026-27 roster

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State women’s basketball head coach Tanisha Wright announces the signing of Irene García to her 2026-27 roster. García becomes the eighth member of Wright’s squad for the upcoming year and third freshman newcomer to join the Lady Lions.

“Irene will add great depth and character to our roster,” said Wright. “We look forward to her international experience and the toughness she displays on a consistent basis.”

The freshman arrives in Happy Valley from Urnieta, Baque Country, Spain. García played for Segle XXI Academy, a renowned government-backed elite female basketball academy near Barcelona, Spain. Her team played in Liga Femenina 2, known as the Spanish Women’s Second Division, for her final two seasons from 2024-26 and played in the Catalan Junior League from 2022-2024. In 2023, she was selected to play for Gipuzkoa’s U16 team in addition to a selection to the Basque Country U16 squad.

Prior to her time with Segle XXI, she got called to the U14 Gipuzkoa and Basque Country teams while playing in the BeraBera, Basque League. García got a nod from the Spanish National Team to play for their U14 squad in 2022.
