BRATISLAVA, Slovakia – Penn State wrestling incoming freshman student-athlete Jayden James is set to open United World Wrestling U20 World Championship freestyle competition beginning Saturday and concluding Sunday, August 22 and 23, at Sportova Hala Mladost in Bratislava, Slovakia.
The rookie Nittany Lion is set to compete at 74 kilograms as a representative of the United States of America, facing off against some of the strongest wrestlers at his weight from around the globe. Action is slated to begin with opening rounds on Saturday at approximately 4 a.m. (ET), with the qualifying rounds slated to conclude by 8:30 a.m. (ET). Wrestling resumes Saturday with semi-finals at approximately 11 a.m. (ET). Sunday gets underway with repechage competition around 10:15 a.m. (ET) and concludes with medal matches at noon (ET). All of James’ bouts, as well as the remainder of the U20 World Championship contests, will stream live in the United States via FloWrestling and the FloSports app for subscribers on connected devices.
According to available brackets from UWW, James is slated to begin his stay in Bratislava with a qualifying round bout against Slovakian Samuel Vokal. The winner of the bout between James and Vokal will advance to the round of 16 and face off against Italian competitor Alessio Perentin. Hailing from Westwood, New Jersey, James prepares to enter his first season at Penn State in the 2026-27 academic year. The incoming freshman Nittany Lion boasts a wide array of career individual accolades, highlighted by a 71 kilogram men’s freestyle gold medal at the 2025 U17 World Championships. Over the course of the 2026 freestyle circuit, James has already taken a first-place finish at the U20 World Team Trials in order to punch his ticket to Bratislava, additionally boasting a runner-up result at the Senior World Team Trials at his weight class and an individual championship at U20 Nationals.
At 18-years-old, James is one of just two rostered athletes on the United States U20 Men’s Freestyle National Team to boast a previous UWW age-group World Championship gold medal. James owns a freestyle gold medal from the 2025 U17 Pan American Championships, as well as multiple U.S. Marine Corps Junior Nationals 16U men’s freestyle and Kids Nationals 14U freestyle crowns over the past four years. In addition to his freestyle accolades, James is also an accomplished world-level Greco-Roman wrestling athlete, highlighted by a 2025 Pan American Greco-Roman gold medal showing in Monterrey, Mexico.
Penn State saw a pair of student-athletes win U20 World Championships a year ago in Samokov, Bulgaria, with rising sophomore 61 kilogram wrestler Marcus Blaze and rising sophomore 70 kilogram grappler PJ Duke taking home individual crowns. The Blue & White saw three additional athletes leave Bulgaria with medals in 2025, with rising sophomore William Henckel taking silver at 79 kilograms, and rising juniors Connor Mirasola and Cole Mirasola taking bronze at 92 and 125 kilograms, respectively. Penn State has seen at least one wrestler take home a U20 World title in each of the last three events, booking five championships, four silver medals and five bronze medals at the U20 World Championships since 2022.

The Nittany Lion wrestling program, under the direction of 18-year head coach Cael Sanderson, is fresh off a record-setting 2025-26 season in which the Blue & White took home their fifth consecutive national championship and 13th NCAA team title in the last 15 events. Penn State reset the NCAA Championship team scoring record for the third consecutive season, registering 181.5 points in Cleveland during the 2026 event, passing the program’s and NCAA’s previous record of 177.0 set the year before in Philadelphia. PSU saw a quartet of student-athletes book undefeated national championship seasons in 2026, with 125-pounder Luke Lilledahl, 174-pounder Levi Haines, 197-pounder Josh Barr and 165-pound Dan Hodge Trophy winner Mitchell Mesenbrink hauling in those honors.
In men’s freestyle competition, Penn State has established itself as the premier training facility for world-level athletes at the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club and Penn State Regional Training Center. The NLWC/Penn State RTC are responsible for one half of the 2026 United States men’s freestyle national team, highlighted by a current Nittany Lion in Blaze. Current Penn State student-athletes, as well as alumni and NLWC/Penn State RTC athletes have multiple freestyle events on the docket following James’ showing at the U20 World Championships, with the Poland Open (August 26-30), U23 World Championships (October 12-18) and UWW Senior World Championships (October 24-November 1) highlighting the upcoming calendar.
