Freshman Nittany Lion earns World Silver Medal at 74kg in Bratislava

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia – Penn State freshman wrestler Jayden James impressed at the United World Wrestling U20 World Championships this Saturday and Sunday, taking the silver medal in the men’s freestyle 74-kilogram weight class at Sportova Hala Mladost in Bratislava, Slovakia.

A native of Westwood, New Jersey, James booked his second career age-group world medal this weekend, pairing his silver medal finish at the 2026 U20 event with a gold medal result at the U17 World Championships a year ago at 71kg. Over the course of the 2026 freestyle campaign, James additionally boasts a first-place finish at the U20 World Team Trials and a runner-up result at the Senior World Team Trials, also booking an individual championship at U20 Nationals. Over his two-day stint in Bratislava, James booked a pair of victories by technical superiority and outscored his opposition by a 53-22 differential.

James’ journey opened with qualifying round action on Saturday, facing off against Samuel Vokal of host Slovakia in his first bout of the championship. James made quick work of Vokal, needing just one minute and 25 seconds to notch a win by technical superiority in 11-0 fashion. The round of 16 got underway shortly thereafter, pitting James against a familiar foe in Alessio Perentin of Italy. Perentin, a fellow New Jersey native, was teammates with James at the Delbarton School during their respective high school careers. James overcame his former high school teammate by decision, 7-5, to reach the quarterfinal round.

Saturday rolled on as James faced off against Artsiom Bolsun of Belarus in the quarterfinal, notching his second victory of the U20 World Championships by technical superiority. The rookie Nittany Lion dispatched Bolsun by a 10-0 score in one minute and 42 seconds of work, punching his ticket to Saturday’s semifinals. Facing off against Nurdaulet Seilbekov of Kazakhstan, James was quickly in control through the first three minutes, leading 4-2 heading into the final stanza. The Nittany Lion managed to separate himself further over the course of the second period, ultimately coming away with a 13-4 decision to punch his ticket to the gold medal bout.

James met Japan’s Ariya Yoshida in Sunday’s gold medal match, registering an early takedown at the 2:38 mark of the first to take a 2-0 lead. James added another takedown at 2:14 to go up 4-0, but Yoshida clawed back and made it a two-point bout at the break, 6-4. James booked the first takedown of the second period 35 seconds in to go up by four, but Yoshida rattled off five unanswered points to take a 9-7 lead. The Penn Stater replied with a massive four-point feet-to-back takedown to re-establish the lead at 11-9, and an additional point came on the board for James to make it 12-9, but back-to-back takedowns from Yoshida inside the final 30 seconds finalized the 13-12 result for Japan to take the gold. A Penn State-affiliated athlete has now booked a medal in each of the last five U20 World Championship events, with the Blue & White mustering five championships, five silver medals and five bronze medals at the event since 2022.
