MATCH DAY: Penn State WSOC vs. Minnesota

OPENING KICKOFF

• Penn State women’s soccer hosts its first Big Ten home match when the Nittany Lions welcome Minnesota on Sunday. Kickoff is set for noon (ET) as the program will celebrate the future of the world’s game with Youth Soccer Day at Jeffrey Field. 

• The Blue & White own a 29-2-1 record in Big Ten home openers. Penn State enters Sunday’s contest as winners of four straight conference home openers. 

• Penn State entered the week ranked 18th in the country in points per match with 8.80. PSU began conference play tied for 18th in the nation in scoring offense at three goals per match, now sitting at 2.5. PSU also ranked tied for 22nd nationally in assists per match at 2.80 before the week started. 

• Eight Nittany Lions have registered at least three points with seven of them recording at least one goal and one assist. Five additional members of the squad have one goal contribution each. In total, PSU has recorded 44 points through six matches. 

• Penn State dropped a tight, 1-0 result on the road against No. 6 Ohio State on Thursday. 

• In the match, Penn State posted its second-highest shot total of the season with 16, including 11 in the second half. Junior forward Aubrey Kulpa recorded a season-high of five shots while sophomore midfielder Kennedy Ring registered a career-high of three shots. Kulpa’s three assists this season tie for fifth in the Big Ten while her 20 shots place her in a tie for 12th in the league. 

• Redshirt senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Gress made four saves, increasing her season total to 25. She is tied for third in the Big Ten in saves. Gress has already earned a Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Week honor this season following the team’s two shutouts against Bucknell and Brown. 

• Erica Dambach, serving as the head coach of the Nittany Lions for the 20th season, earned her 300th career victory as the leader of Penn State women's soccer against Bucknell on August 27. With the triumph, Dambach further cemented her status as one of the all-time great coaches in collegiate women's soccer and Penn State Athletics.

MEASURING MINNESOTA

• Minnesota enter Sunday’s contest with a 5-1-1 record, coming off a 1-0 victory over No. 25 Iowa on Thursday. The Golden Gophers took the win despite being outshot 22-12 and conceding 12 corner kicks to their one. 

• Minnesota ranks fourth in the Big Ten with a +11 goal differential, scoring 15 times while allowing four goals. Forward Davy Mokelke leads the way with four goals through the team’s first seven outings. 

• Forward Tenley Senden scored the Gophers’ lone goal against the Hawkeyes to move into second on the team with six points. She has two goals and two assists. Forward Ava Westlund also has two goals and is the team leader in shots with 24. 

• Midfielder Hailee Christensen has been the leading playmaker, assisting three goals this season. 

• Goalkeeper Sarah Martin has started all seven matches of her senior season, saving 21 shots with a 0.840 save percentage. Her 0.58 goals against average is the lowest of her career. She has 14 career shutouts, including two this season. 

• Minnesota owns a 123-62 edge in shots when compared to its opponents this season. Additionally, the Golden Gophers have a 54-26 edge in corner kicks.

STORY OF THE SERIES

• Penn State and Minnesota have matched up 34 times previously with the Nittany Lions owning a decisive, 26-6-2 lead in the series. 

• Sunday marks the first meeting between the two schools since November 1, 2024, when Penn State defeated the Golden Gophers 1-0 in Saint Paul in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament. 

• The last match between the two programs at Jeffrey Field was just a few weeks earlier during the 2024 campaign on October 13. The Blue & White earned a 3-2 victory. Two current members of the squad, Bella Ayscue and Kaelyn Wolfe, earned points in the win. Wolfe scored the first goal of her career while Ayscue recorded an assist. Former Gopher, now Nittany Lion, Paige Kalal, earned an assist in the match. 

• PSU has not lost to Minnesota on its home pitch since 2015, a season that saw the program go on to win the Big Ten Tournament and national championship.
