Men's Golf Co-Hosts Canadian Collegiate Invitational This Week to Open Fall Slate

MacTier, Ontario – The Penn State men’s golf team is set to open the fall slate by co-hosting an NCAA Division I men’s golf tournament in Canada for the third-straight season beginning on Sunday. Kent State serves as the additional host for the Canadian Collegiate Invitational at Öviinbyrd Golf Club in MacTier, Ontario.

The 54-hole event will feature three-straight 9:30 a.m. shotgun starts for each round from Sunday through Tuesday.

ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT

  • The Canadian Collegiate Invitational will be conducted by Golf Canada and co-hosted by Penn State and Kent State who are both led by Canadian head coaches in Penn State’s Mark Leon and Kent State's Jon Mills.
  • The Nittany Lions and Golden Flashes are joined by Rutgers, UNC-Wilmington, Missouri, Mississippi State, New Mexico, Santa Clara, Cal Poly, Northern Illinois, Notre Dame, Abilene Christian and the University of British Columbia Okanagan in the 13-team field.
  • Scattered individuals from each team will round out the roughly 75-player field north of the border.
  • Öviinbyrd Golf Club is one of Canada's premier golf courses, designed by Thomas McBroom and opened in 2004 in Muskoka, Ont. The 7,118-yard layout is set amongst the forests and exposed granite of the Canadian shield in Ontario's famous cottage country and will create a challenging and memorable experience for the players. Öviinbyrd's recently renovated practice facility features world class training conditions and state-of-the-art technology and will benefit players participating in both the NCAA event and the Team Canada – NextGen selection camp.
  • Notre Dame is the back-to-back defending champion, winning last year’s event by 10 strokes over Michigan while Penn State finished 10th in the 11-team field last September.

THE TEAM

  • Penn State is led by senior Alex Creamean who shaved nearly three strokes off his average during his second year in Happy Valley pacing the Nittany Lions with a 70.97 stroke average over 29 rounds competing in all 10 events last season.
  • Creamean finished tied for fifth at Öviinbyrd last September posting an 8-under, 208, to lead Penn State. He is joined in the lineup this week by classmate Tim Peters, junior Will Preston, Siena transfer Colton Lusk and freshman Ravi Desai.
  • Sophomore Jackson Saroney will also compete this week in the individual slot for the Nittany Lions.
  • Saroney and Peters finished last season with stroke averages of 72.54 and 73.86, respectively. Both Lusk and Desai will make their Nittany Lion debuts this week.

NEXT UP

Penn State will take the next week off from competition before competing at the Windon Memorial hosted by Northwestern at Owentsia Club in Lake Forest, Illinois on September 28-29.
