UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – All 16 players on Penn State’s roster saw playing time in a 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-9) sweep over Ohio in non-conference women’s volleyball action Saturday night at Rec Hall. The Nittany Lions recorded their third-consecutive sweep to improve to 6-1, while the Bobcats dipped to 4-3 overall.
Penn State racked up 11 aces in the win, including four apiece by Caroline Jurevicius and Danielle Whitmire. Jurevicius served back-to-back aces twice during the match. Whitmire had four straight aces during the Nittany Lions’ blowout win in the third set.
Jurevicius added six kills on .625 hitting while playing the final two sets of the sweep. Freshman Haley Burgdorf also had six kills to share the team lead. In all, 12 Penn State players had at least one kill in the match.
Bailey Blair was the top performer for Ohio, finishing with 11 kills and one block. The Bobcats were held to .138 hitting.
Penn State improved to 3-0 in the all-time series with Ohio, winning all three matches with a sweep.
Set 1
Gabrielle Nichols finished with four kills and one block to lead Penn State to a 25-21 win in the opening set. The Nittany Lions led by one at 22-21 before scoring the final three points on a service error and back-to-back kills by setter Alexis Stucky.
Set 2
Jurevicius hit .500 with four kills and two aces to help Penn State hang on for a 25-23 win in the second set. The Nittany Lions used a 4-0 run to go up 17-11, scoring on kills by Finley Krystkowiak and Kendall Northern and back-to-back aces by Jurevicius. Ohio fought all the way back to tie the score at 23-all following a pair of kills by Blair. Jurevicius responded with a kill, and Krystkowiak followed with a kill of her own to end the set.
Set 3
Whitmire’s four straight aces helped Penn State cruise to a 25-9 win in the final set. Burgdorf added four kills on five attacks. Whitmire’s four aces came during a 6-0 run that made the score 22-6. Match point was later scored on a kill by Burgdorf.
