UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State men’s soccer program dropped a second Big Ten contest Friday evening, this time falling to No. 19 Michigan State on home turf in a 1-0 decision. With the result, PSU dropped to 2-4 (0-2 B1G) in the 2026 campaign, while Michigan State improved to 6-1-1 (2-0 B1G).
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF
Michigan State took the opening kickoff, but it wasn’t long until the Nittany Lions moved up the field on their own attack. In the second minute, Penn State got the first corner of the game, but an errant service led to no shot.
The fast-paced match continued in the first ten minutes when Kone snuck his way past the Spartan defensive line and was able to get the first shot on target, but the Michigan State keeper made the save. Pressure from both sides led to a plethora of attacks, but the Nittany Lion defense kept their wall high, forbidding any Spartans to enter the 18-yard box.
In the 19th minute of the match, the first yellow card appeared to Penn State in an aggressive back-and-forth between the two Big Ten foes. In the 27th minute the Nittany Lions received their second booking of the match, this one addressed to senior Noah Andreas in his first collegiate appearance.
With less than ten minutes remaining in the half, Penn State found themselves in their attacking box. Freshman Sheridan McNish attempted a shot in the bottom left corner of the net, but his shot was picked off by the MSU defender. The attack didn’t end there for the Nittany Lions as junior Etienne Reck went for goal on the very next play but was just slightly off target.
The momentum continued in the final few minutes of play as the ball was in a seesaw between the Blue & White offense and Michigan State defense. Andreas took possession of the ball in the 39th minute following a scrum in the Spartan 18. He launched the ball to goal, but the crossbar took the hit instead of the back of the net, and all remained level at the break.
SECOND HALF
Coming out of the locker room, the Nittany Lions stepped onto the pitch for the second half with fire. Junior Arian Recinos started things offensively for Penn State, as he attempted a shot but was inches off target from the top of the net just a few minutes into the second frame.
Penn State’s offense continued its strong showing and played the first 15 minutes of the second on their attacking end. The Blue & White were awarded the first corner of the second half and continued to hold possession, but it wasn’t until the 52nd minute Andreas that another chance materialized for the Nittany Lions. Andreas ripped another shot towards the cage, but an MSU defender parried the shot away.
Freshman Nehan Hasan took part in the offensive action as he attempted a shot to the bottom right corner of the net, but the Spartan keeper got his hands on the ball before it could cross the line.
In the 57th minute, the Nittany Lions received their third caution of the night, as Recinos made a heavy tackle just past midfield.
The Penn State defense kept cool as Michigan State attempted a run up the field, in the 58th minute, keeping the scoreboard clean. The home team looked to be keeping things under wraps for the final 15th of the match. The Spartans looked for constant opportunities, but the Nittany Lions defense was able block off any attempted shots. Freshman goalkeeper Daniel Peluffo-Wiese saw some action in the 80th minute, recording his first save of the match.
It wasn’t until the 85th minute that the score sheet saw a tally. MSU served a corner that was flicked back across the six-yard box by the Spartans. A flying dive on the back post had a Michigan State attacker connect his head to the flailing ball, and was able to slip the rock into the back of the net, clearing the path to victory for MSU.=
