Men’s Soccer Falls To Rutgers

Penn State remained scoreless after an early strike from the Scarlet Knights

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State men’s soccer team fell, 5-0, against Rutgers on Tuesday night from Jeffrey Field.

Penn State dropped to 2-8-2 in the 2026 campaign, while Rutgers improved to 7-6-1 overall. The Nittany Lions dropped to 0-6-2 in the Big Ten, still seeking their first conference win this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST HALF

After the opening kickoff from Rutgers, the Nittany Lions were forced to play some early defense. With the ball sent quickly downfield, the Penn State back line could not hold off the opening attack. The Scarlet Knights put one past goalkeeper Daniel Peluffo-Wiese in the first minute, putting them up 1-0.

While the Nittany Lions were able to recover and gain some possession of the ball, the Rutgers defense prevented any opportunities from being created. In the seventh minute, the Scarlet Knights took over possession again and put another shot behind Peluffo-Wiese, giving them an early 2-0 lead over Penn State.

The Nittany Lions were able to earn a corner in the 18th minute of play after a blocked shot from Nehan Hasan. The ball was sent into play and headed out, where Rutgers gained control and took the ball downfield. The Scarlet Knights earned a corner after a blocked shot attempt, resulting in another goal in the 20th minute, putting them up 3-0.

Rutgers remained in control for the final minutes in the opening half. Penn State continued defending in its half of the field apart from a few long balls downfield that didn’t result in any scores.

SECOND HALF

The second half of play opened with more possession from Rutgers. While the Scarlet Knights were able to get two back-to-back shots off in the 50th minute, Peluffo-Wiese made two huge saves to prevent the Scarlet Knights from increasing their lead.

In the 54th minute, Rutgers scored its fourth goal of the game, giving them a 4-0 edge over the Blue & White.

The Nittany Lions challenged a penalty kick called after a tackle in the 18-yard box in the 60th minute. After review, the call was upheld and the Scarlet Knights converted the penalty kick, putting them up 5-0.

Penn State challenged a foul on Rutgers in the 64th minute of play, looking for the call to be upgraded to a red card. After VAR review, the call on the field was upgraded to a yellow, giving the visitors a caution. While the ensuing free kick resulted in a save from Rutgers, the Blue & White earned a corner moments later in the 65th minute. A strong shot from Beckham Brown was shut down by Rutgers, leading to another corner for the Nittany Lions in the 66th minute, but PSU was unable to capitalize on the opportunity.
