Dowiak, Kuzma Score Twice as Penn State Downs Canisius, 5-1

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Senior Dane Dowiak and sophomore Andrew Kuzma each tallied twice as Penn State earned its first win of the season with a 5-1 victory over Canisius in non-conference action at Pegula Ice Arena on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Penn State (1-4-0) opened the scoring early in the first period as freshman Justin Larose slipped the puck out front from behind the net right on the stick of senior Dane Dowiak between the rings and he ripped a wrister past the glove of Golden Griffin net-minder Jack Lisson for the 1-0 edge at the 2:19 mark.
  • Canisius (3-3-1) found the equalizer early in the second period as Ben Brunelle picked the shortside corner over the right shoulder of Nittany Lion sophomore net-minder Josh Fleming for the 1-1 score just 78 ticks into the frame.
  • The Nittany Lions regained the lead shortly after as freshman Kale Dach poked the puck from between the circles right on the stick of sophomore Andrew Kuzma and he flicked a wrister post the outstretched blocker of Lisson for the 2-1 advantage at 3:03 of the middle stanza.
  • The hosts extended the lead just past the midway point of the middle frame as Dowiak netted his second of the night, this time on the powerplay, as he sent a centering pass out front and it redirected off a Golden Griffin skate and through the wickets of Lisson for the 3-1 score at the 12:53 mark.
  • Kuzma then found the empty net from 180 feet at the 17:43 mark of the third period before sophomore Jackson Smith roofed a shot at the near post over Lisson for the 5-1 final with just five seconds remaining in the game.
