Penn State Swim and Dive Competes In Day One Of The Virginia Tech Invitational

Freshman Pedro Medrado finds the top of the podium twice

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Penn State swimming and diving team kicked off its season by competing in day one of the Virginia Tech Invitational at Christiansburg Aquatic Center on Friday, October 2.

The men’s team faced Virginia Tech and West Virginia, while the women faced Virginia Tech and Liberty.

 

Men

Top Swims:

Top finishes from the night came from freshman Pedro Medrado, finishing first in the men’s 200 IM with a 1:46.37 and first in the men’s 200 Fly with a 1:45.05. Senior Alex Karahalis also found the podium in the men's 200 IM, placing second with a 1:47.96.

Senior and Big Ten Swimmer to Watch Honoree Tylor Kim grabbed second in the men's 100 Free, swimming a 42.98.

Senior Toni Slavica placed third after swimming a 44.92 in the men’s 100 Free.

Freshman Charlie Begin notched a fifth-place finish in the men’s 200 Back, swimming a 1:46.78.

Relays:

Both relay teams placed fifth in their respective events, with the 200-Free relay team of Artur Vilela Queiroz, Slavica, Medrado, and Begin swimming a 1:22.80, and the 400-Medley relay team of Begin, Gabriel Campos, Medrado, and Kim swimming a 3:14.50.

Two additional 400-Medley relay teams grabbed seventh and ninth in the event, respectively.

Diving:

The men’s diving team competed in the 1-meter dive on day one of the invitational. Junior Alex Wodehouse had the best finish for the Nittany Lions, scoring a 198.90, which proved good for ninth place.

 

Women

Top Swims:

Freshman Gabi Abruzzo grabbed third in the women’s 200 Fly, notching a 2:04.44.

Freshman Kate Fedor swam a 2:02.69 in the women’s 200 Back, good for a seventh place tie, while freshman Sara McNabb grabbed a sixth-place finish in the women’s 100 Free with a 50.85.

Relays:

The 200-Medley relay team of Katie Ketter, Cyrah Robinson, McNabb and Julia Shafer notched a fourth place finish with a 1:32.84.


The 400-Medley relay team of Shafer, Audrey Cohen, Robinson, and Ketter finished sixth in the event. 

Diving:

The women’s diving team competed in the 3-meter dive on day one of the invitational.

Senior Abigail Ekstrom placed eighth with a score of 231.40.

 

The Nittany Lions return to competition tomorrow for the second day of the Virginia Tech Invitational. The men’s team will face Virginia Tech and West Virginia, while the women’s team will face Virginia Tech and Liberty. Competition resumes at 10 a.m. in the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.
