UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Danny McGaughey and Pedro Medrado both claimed Big Ten’s weekly awards for their performances at the Virginia Tech invitational, the conference announced Wednesday. Freshman Medrado claimed Big Ten Freshman of the Week, while senior McGaughey took home Big Ten Diver of the Week.
McGaughey takes home the top honor for divers this week after posting the highest 3-meter dive score for the Penn State diving team. He also recorded a 180.10 in the one-meter dive.
Medrado earns the award after a stellar collegiate debut, earning three individual event wins in the 200 fly (1:45.05), 200 IM (1:46.37) and 400 IM (3:49.19). The Brazilian native posted the best time in the Big Ten in the 400 IM and the conference’s third-best time in the 200 IM. Medrado also holds the fourth-best conference time in the 200 fly and helped the Nittany Lions to a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (2:55.78).
The men’s swimming and diving team will travel to Atlanta for the Georgia Tech Dual Meet Tournament from Oct. 16-17.
