UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State men’s tennis sophomore Emil Matikainen has been named the Big Ten Player of the Week, as announced by the conference on Wednesday. This is the first time Matikainen has received this award in his career.
Matikainen went undefeated in singles over the weekend during the Penn State Men’s Tennis Invitational.
In singles play, Matikainen beat Cleveland State’s Alexander Nikolov 6-3, 6-3 in the first round and Nikolas Jacobson 6-2, 6-2 in the second. He won each of his five matches in straight sets without dropping one.
Matikainen secured four doubles victories throughout the weekend, defeating Cleveland State’s Emil Dapcevic and Alexander Nikolov, 6-3 in the first round.
Matikainen is currently 5-0 in singles and 4-1 in doubles for the fall season.
