THIS WEEK’S MATCHUP

  • Penn State begins its 15th season as an NCAA Division I program with this weekend marking its first appearance in the Ice Breaker Tournament and featuring just the sixth all-time meeting against UConn and the seventh against Sacred Heart.
  • The Ice Breaker Tournament, which began in 1997 in Madison, Wis., annually brings together four teams typically from different conferences, to celebrate the start of the college hockey season. College Hockey Inc. administers the Ice Breaker on behalf of the Hockey Commissioners Association.
  • This weekend marks Penn State’s second trip to Storrs and first since its inaugural season in January 2013 when the Huskies swept the Nittany Lions 4-3 and 4-1. Penn State is unbeaten in the last three meetings between the two with a 2-0-1 record including the 3-2 overtime win in the 2025 Allentown Regional final at the PPL Center.
  • Out of both rosters only 11 players played in that 2025 regional final, six from UConn and five from Penn State.
  • Penn State is also making just its second trip to Fairfield dating back to a 6-3 victory for the Nittany Lions over the Pioneers in just the fifth game in program history on October 27, 2012. This is also the first meeting between the two teams in seven years. Penn State leads the all-time series 6-0-0 and are outscoring SHU 32-14 over the previous six meetings.
  • This weekend also marks the seventh time in 15 seasons that Penn State has opened play on the road including the fourth-consecutive season. Penn State is 10-3-1 all-time in season opening contests and have won seven of the last eight including five straight. After last season, Penn State is 4-2-0 all-time in season openers on the road with four straight wins.

Series Breakdown

SCOUTING UCONN

  • UConn finished the 2025-26 season with a 20-13-5 record while advancing to the Hockey East Championship game for the second-straight season before losing to Merrimack, 2-1. The Huskies then bowed out of the NCAA Tournament with a 2-1 loss to Michigan State in the opening round.
  • UConn is coming off back-to-back 20+-win campaigns and have won 20 or more games in four of the last five seasons.
  • The Huskies are without the services of three of their top-5 scorers from a season ago including leading point and assist man Ryan Tattle (13-19--32) as well as third-leading scorer and second in assists Jake Richard (10-17--27).
  • UConn does return leading goal scorer Joey Muldowney for his senior year. Muldowney potted 17 goals a season ago and finished second on the team with 29 points.

SCOUTING SACRED HEART

  • Sacred Heart finished the 2025-26 season with a 24-14-3 record falling to Bentley 3-2 in the Atlantic Hockey Championship game. The Pioneers were picked to win Atlantic Hockey in the 2026-27 preseason polls

Leading scorer Felix Trudeau is now playing in the American Hockey League after an All-American campaign a season ago where he was the AHA scoring champion after potting 25 goals and adding 23 assists for 48 points. Leading assist man in defenseman Mikey Adamson is also gone after a 34-point, 30-assist campaign a season ago.
  • Like the Nittany Lions, the Pioneers are looking to replace most of its offensive production from a season ago as they are without 69 percent of its goal scoring and overall point production from 2025-26, the most in the Atlantic and fifth most nationally.
  • Between the pipes is where Sacred Heart can shine as junior Ajeet Gundarah returns after posting a 13-7-1 record with a .928 save percentage and a 2.09 goals-against average.
  • Gundarah enters the season leading the nation among active goaltenders in save percentage with a career .933 and is second in goals-against average with a 1.98 GAA over his first two seasons. His 29 wins and five shutouts also rank fifth among active goaltenders.

NON-CONFERENCE DOMINATION

  • Following Jeff Jackson’s retirement following the 2024-25 campaign, Gadowsky is now the longest tenured coach in the Big Ten and the ninth longest tenured in the nation in his 15th season in Hockey Valley. He has led Penn State to seven 20+-win seasons, all within the past 11 years, and five NCAA Tournaments (six if you include 2020) along with the 2025 Frozen Four.

NEW YEAR, NEW OPPORTUNITIES

  • Penn State saw five different players ink NHL entry-level contracts following the 2025-26 season including 2026 No. 1 overall pick Gavin McKenna.
  • Overall, the Nittany Lions are replacing 13 players with 12 newcomers including a trio of transfers.
  • Penn State lost 63 percent of its overall scoring along with 60 percent of its goal scoring from a season ago, the most in the Big Ten and the seventh and eighth most nationally.
  • Of the 12 newcomers, PSU brought in Justin Poirier from Maine, one of the top scorers in the transfer portal along with some of the top scorers from the CHL in Justin Larose (QMJHL), Marco Mignosa (OHL) and Kale Dach (WHL).
  • In total Penn State’s freshman crop of six skaters (Larose, Mignosa, Dach, Weber, Pitre, Busch) combined for 18 seasons in the CHL playing a total of 1,118 games scoring 398 goals while adding 553 assists for 951 points.
  • Of the 12 newcomers, seven have been drafted by NHL teams giving the Nittany Lions 11 total draft picks on the 2026-27 roster, the most in a single-season in program history. Of those 11 only nine remain tied to the organizations that drafted them as Nolan Collins and Kaden Pitre’s rights have since expired and they have become free agents.

BLUELINE BEAUTIES

  • Sophomore Jackson Smith and senior Mac Gadowsky are two of the top returning defensemen in the nation.
  • Smith set the Penn State single-season goal record for defensemen with 11 last year to lead all Big Ten defensemen and rank fourth in the nation. Smith finished the year with 26 points, the second most in the Big Ten and 15th nationally among blueliners.
  • Smith’s 11 goals already rank tied for eighth all-time for Nittany Lion blueliners while his seven powerplay tallies also topped the nation among defensemen a season ago while being a Nittany Lion single-season record for blueliners and tied for the second-most in a single-season all-time.
  • Smith was named a B1G All-Freshman Team honoree and Second Team All-Big Ten selection a season ago and earlier this year landed on the Preseason All-B1G Second Team.
  • Gadowsky, a former First-Team All-American, finished second on the team in defenseman scoring behind Smith with 18 points on one goal and 17 assists during his first season in Hockey Valley after transferring from Army West Point.
  • Gadowsky enters his senior season with 83 career points, just one shy of Minnesota’s Evan Murr for the most among active blueliners in the nation while his 21 goals are two behind Murr for the national lead. Gadowsky’s 62 assists lead all returning defensemen nationally and are good for third among all skaters.

DON’T GET SHORT WITH US
