2008-09 (Junior): Swam personal bests in three events: 100, 200, and 500 freestyle...Clocked a time of 45.04 at the Big Ten Championships in the 100 free prelims, finished 22nd overall...Notched a 1:36.86 in the 200 freestyle as the leadoff leg of the 800 free relay that finished sixth (6:30.12)...Finished 17th overall in the 200 free event as an individual...Swam personal-best time of 4:28.42 in the 500 free at the OSU Invitational, notching 17th place...Finished 37th at Big Tens in the 500 free event with a time of 4:28.54...Took part in the 200 free relay (1:23.72) at the OSU Invitational, which took ninth place...Second-place finisher in the 100 free vs. St. Bonaventure...Third-place finisher at Maryland/Pittsburgh/Villanova in the 200 free with a time of 1:41.68...Had two other third-place performances in the 200 free vs. SMU and West Virginia ...Member of 400 free relay squad that finished eighth with a time of 3:02.06 at the Ohio State Invitational...Member of first-place 400 free relay squad and finished third in the 200 free...Competed at the U.S. Open meet, swimming a personal best in the long-course 200m free (1:54.01)...Won the 200 butterfly at the Mid-Atlantic Senior Championship...Finished seventh in the 400 free and fourth in the 200 free.
2007-08 (Sophomore): Improved consistency in the 200 freestyle and earned a spot on some relay teams...Collected a first-place finish at the Princeton Invitational in the 800 freestyle relay...Swam a season best in the 200 freestyle at the Big Ten Championships....Swam on 800 free relay team that placed fifth at Big Ten Championships...Finished 24th in 200 freestyle at Big Tens...Second-place finisher in 200 freestyle at Pittsburgh/Villanova/Missouri/Maryland quad meet...Competed at the U.S. Olympic trials in the 1,500m...Finished fourth in three events at the Speedo Super Sectional: 50 free, 100 free, and 200 free, while finishing seventh in the 400 freestyle event.
Summer 2007: Swam at four different meets starting at the Eric Namesnik Memorial Grand Prix swimming in the 200, 400 and 1500-meter freestyle...Swam in the 200 and 800 free at the Charlotte Ultraswim of the Grand Prix series and also was on the ninth-place 400 free relay team...At the Mid-Atlantic Senior Championships, finished eighth in the 200 free and also swam in both butterfly events...Swam in the 800-meter and 1500-meter free at U.S. Nationals.
2006-07 (Freshman): Dropped almost 17 seconds off his previous best time in the 1650 freestyle in finishing 12th at Big Ten Championships earning an NCAA `B[apos] time...Specialized in the distance freestyle events as a freshman and also saw time on the 800 free relay team at time during the season...On the year, had one first-place finish, two second-places and one-third place...Finished in the top five in two out of three 1650 free races and in to the top five in three out of four swims in the 1000 free...Clocked the third fastest time of the year on the team in both the 500 and 1650 free and the second best in the 1000 free...In first collegiate meet, finished second in the 500 free and fourth in the 1000 free and also was on the fifth place 400 free relay team in the dual meet at West Virginia...Came in eighth in the 500 free and fifth in the 1,000 free at the Clemson/Virginia/Virginia Tech/Penn State quad-meet...Placed fourth in the 1,000 free at the Purdue Duals...Picked up points for Penn State in the 800-meter free (11th place) and the 1500-meter free (fourth place), and also swam in the 400-meter free at the Bell Grand Prix...Finished second in the 200 free in the dual meet vs. West Chester...Won his first career race with a first-place finish in the 500 in the dual meet vs. Rutgers...Finished seventh in both the 200 and 500 free, swimming his best time of the year in the 500 free, came in second in the 1,650 free and was on the third-place 800 free relay team at the Shamrock Invitational...Finished 12th in the 1,650 free to score points and also placed 20th in the 500 free at Big Ten Championships.
HIGH SCHOOL: Member of three district championship teams while earning four varsity letters at State College Area High School...As a junior, helped lead the team for a seventh-place finish at the state meet and placed fifth at states in the 500 freestyle while also setting a school record in that event and earning All-American status...As a senior, the team finished second in the state and was a part of a state championship 400 free relay team...Individually, finished second in the 200 free and third in the 500 free, once again earning All-American status...Set the school records in the 100, 200, and 500 freestyle events...At Junior Nationals, finished third in both the 1,000 and 1,650 freestyle events.
PERSONAL: Benjamin Thomas Ryan was born on June 18, 1988 in Brunswick, Maine...The son of Bernard and Carrie Ryan and has a younger sister, Jenny...Father attended Penn State and mother swam at Wisconsin-Oshkosh...Majoring in security and risk analysis with career aspirations of working with the Department of Homeland Security.
