Sato played one singles and one doubles match in the spring of 2021.
2019-20 (Freshman)
Sato’s first year as a Nittany Lion was an impactful one. In his run during the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships, the freshman was one of three Nittany Lions to advance to the round of 64 in the singles bracket. In the spring he kept his singles success going with a 6-4 record. He was undefeated on courts two and four, going 1-0 and 2-0, respectively. In doubles, the lefty earned a 3-4 overall record with three different partners. Spring season shortened due to COVID-19 pandemic.
Before Penn State
Chikaya Sato comes to Happy Valley as a five-star recruit with a great deal of junior experience, playing in the Orange Bowl, Easter Bowl and Kalamazoo, as well as many other tournaments. The Tokyo-native moved to New Jersey when he was 10 years old. He attended Cresskill High School where he was crowned the Bergen County Singles Champion and North Jersey Player of the Year during his last three years. Sato was also a state finalist his junior year and named to First Team All-State team his senior year.
