COACHING ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- Andy Kotelnicki, a 21-year coaching veteran with 19 years of offensive coordinator experience, enters year two in 2025 with Penn State.
- Over the last 10 seasons as an offensive coordinator in the FBS, offenses led by Kotelnicki rank first nationally in lowest sack percentage (3.9), lowest tackle for loss percentage (7.9) and margin of error percentage, which factors in sacks, tackles for loss, interceptions and fumbles (9.7).
- During the same window, his units are second in the nation in rushing touchdowns per game (2.2), third down efficiency (43.1), yards per play (6.0) and points per play (0.4).
- Those offenses also stand third in rushing yards per game (188.9), yards per rush (4.7), yards per pass attempt (7.7), 15+ yard pass percentage plays (17.9) and big play percentage (13.3), which measures percentage of plays that are a 12+ yard rush or a 15+ yard pass.
- During Kotelnicki's first season in Happy Valley, Penn State led the Big Ten in 15+ yard pass percentage plays (22.8; 5th nationally) and was second in big play percentage (16.5; 7th), which measures percentage of plays that are a 12+ yard rush or a 15+ yard pass.
- Tyler Warren won the John Mackey Award, recognizing the nation's top tight end, was a first-team All-American and finished seventh in the Heisman Trophy voting during Kotelnicki's first season.
- Warren finished the year first in the Big Ten in receptions (104; T-2nd nationally) and second in receiving yardage (1,233; 7th), while becoming the Penn State single-season record holder for receptions (104) and set the Big Ten tight end single-season record for receptions (104) and receiving yards (1,233).
- Running backs Kaytron Allen (1,108) and Nicholas Singleton (1,099) were the first Nittany Lion duo to both rush for 1,000 yards in a season and were one of two running back duos in the nation to do so in 2024.
- Kotelnicki arrived in Happy Valley after three seasons at Kansas, where those offenses ranked 12th nationally in 20+ yard play percentage (8.3), 15th in 30+ (3.8) and 11th in 40+ (2.1).
- The 2023 247Sports Offensive Coordinator of the Year, Kotelnicki led a KU offense ranking seventh in the nation in yards per completion (14.8), eighth in yards per play (7.0), rushing (211.3), yards per rush (5.51) and explosive play percentage (17.2), and ninth in first down efficiency percentage (56.4) and rushing touchdowns per game (2.5).
- During the 2022 season, Kotelnicki guided one of the most prolific offensive attacks in Kansas history, as KU averaged 438.6 yards per game, the program’s second-best mark since 1950.
- The Jayhawks scoring offense improved by 14.8 points from 2021, which ranked second nationally behind only Washington.
- In Kotelnicki’s first season at KU in 2021, the Jayhawks averaged 324.2 yards per game, compared to 259.2 yards in 2020, and allowed just 16 sacks in 12 games, compared to 47 in only nine games a year before.
- Kansas averaged 5.2 yards per play in his first season after the program averaged 3.7 yards per play in 2020, increased its points per game by five, increased its rushing yards per game by more than 35 yards and increased its third down conversion percentage by 13 percent.
- In 2020 at Buffalo, where Kotelnicki was named a finalist for FootballScoop Offensive Coordinator of the Year, the Bulls went 6-1 and ranked second in the nation in rushing and fifth in scoring (43.5).
- Bulls All-American running back Jaret Patterson led the nation in rushing (178.7) in 2020. Against Kent State, he tied an FBS record with eight rushing scores and ran for 409 yards, the second-most in FBS history.
- In 2019, the Buffalo offense ranked 10th in the nation in rushing (3,256), shattering the single-season school record. Patterson rushed for a school-record 1,799 yards and 19 touchdowns and ranked fifth nationally in rushing, while Kevin Marks rushed for 1,035 yards.
- Buffalo set single-season school records for total offense (5,803 yards) and offensive touchdowns (64) with quarterback Tyree Jackson being named the 2018 MAC Offensive Player of the Year.
- Kotelnicki arrived at UB after winning two Division III national titles leading the offense at Wisconsin-Whitewater. Prior to that, he had stints at University of Mary, UW-River Falls and Western Illinois.
