Michael Behonick is entering his second season on the sidelelines for Head Coach Bob Warming. Behonick joined the Penn State men’s soccer coaching staff on April 21, 2014 following a five-year stint at Virginia. His coaching duties includetraining the goalkeepers and helping to organize the Penn State defense.
During his first year in Happy Valley, Behokick saw his prized keeper, Andrew Wolverton rack up impressive totals, including nine shutouts (T-2nd B1G), .a 790 save percentage (4th in B1G), and 64 saves (6th in B1G). The senior goalie also received All-Big Ten Second Team honors. In addition to Wolverton, the Lion defense also shined under Behonick’s leadership, becoming the third best team in the conference in goals allowed and the fourth best in goals against average. PSU went 13-6-1 and 5-3 in the Big Ten during 2014 and reached the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season. Under the tutelage of Behonick, Andrew Wolverton was selected with the 82nd overall pick to the LA Galaxy following his senior season at Penn State.
While at Virginia, the Cavaliers had a successful 2013 campaign with Behonick on the sidelines as he saw them reach the College Cup Semifinals and earn a 13-6-5 record. Virginia made the NCAA Tournament in all four seasons Behonick was in Charlottesville, which included 31 shutouts.
Prior to Virginia, Behonick played professional soccer for the Puerto Rico Islanders in the USL from 2007 to 2010. He also served as the Islanders’ Academy assistant goalkeeping coach in 2009, which accompanied his Director of Goalkeeping duties for the Syosset Soccer Club (N.Y.) in 2006-08.
Since 2008, Behonick has been a member of the Puerto Rico National Team and has six stints of professional soccer in addition to his time for the Islanders. Behonick was a MLS SuperDraft pick (51st overall) for the D.C. United before playing for the Charleston Battery in USL 1 (2003-05) and Harrisburg City Islanders in the USL 2 for the 2004 season. In 2006, he featured for the New York Red Bulls of MLS as a reserve and Long Island Rough Riders on loan before transitioning to Crystal Palace Baltimore in the USL 2.
Upon his graduation from American University (B.A., business administration) in the spring of 2003, he also served as a volunteer assistant that following fall for the Eagles. Behonick posted 16 shutouts in his collegiate career and earned All-Patriot League honors as a junior. Serving as team captain in 2001 and 2002, Behonick’s team made the NCAA Tournament both times including a 2001 Patriot League title.
