Jill Martz was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week. |
STATE COLLEGE, Pa., October 10, 2000 - The Penn State field hockey team's sophomore defender Jill Martz (Dalmatia, Pa./Line Mountain) was selected the Big Ten's Defensive Player of the Week, as selected by conference officials. This is the first time in her career that she has been selected for the honor.
A starter on defense in every game, Martz helped the Lady Lions to a 2-0 week last week and an 11-2 record overall. She helped to limit Temple University and Big Ten opponent Indiana to a combined six shots, while helping the Penn State goalkeepers post their fifth shutout of the season over the Hoosiers. IU was allowed just one shot for the game.
Martz' defensive efforts also allowed for transition opportunities which resulted in two assists and her first career goal in the two contests.
The Penn State defense has been solid all season, with Martz playing a key role. Three times has the Lion-defense not given up a shot or a penalty corner the entire game.
The No. 6 Penn State field hockey team is also 3-0 in the Big Ten. The Lady Lions will play Bucknell tomorrow night, October 11, at 7 p.m. on Bigler Field, before returning to conference action on Friday at Northwestern.
