The Penn State women's basketball team opens its home season Tuesday at 7 p.m. vs. Duquesne. The game will be broadcast on the Penn State Sports Radio Network. That feed, as well as the GameTracker feature, is available at www.GoPSUsports.com. Attached are game notes, including updated statistics.
The Lady Lions are coming off a tough three-game road stretch in which they dropped two games against top-10 teams in Texas and Duke. Most recently, Penn State fell to Villanova, 73-65, in Philadelphia.
Penn State is led by All-American candidate Tanisha Wright (West Mifflin, Pa.), who is averaging a team-best 22.0 ppg this year. Wright is also contributing 4.0 rebounds and 3.3 assists per contest. She is joined in the backcourt by Jess Strom (Munhall, Pa.), who is averaging 13.3 ppg and 4.3 apg this season. Against Villanova, Ashli Schwab (Myerstown, Pa.) came alive, scoring 20 points, and adding eight rebounds.
For the first time in her career, Rene Portland will not be on the sideline to lead the Lady Lions. The Penn State coach, citing medicial reasons, is taking a leave of absence for an undetermined period of time. Associate Head Coach Annie Troyan will serve as acting head coach in Portland's absence.
