Penn State improved to 2-1 on the year, and handed Lock Haven its first loss of the season as the Lady Eagles fell to 2-1.
The game was the first-ever contest at the Lions' new home, temporarily named Astroturf Field. The Lions scored first when Shaun Banta (Gibbsboro, N.J.) scored off a pass from Carey Maser (Medford, N.J.) 17 minutes into the game on a penalty corner play. Annelise Legel (Morgantown, Pa.) connected off a pass from All-American Bekah Hostetler (Hershey, Pa.) right before the half ended at 33:58 to put the Nittany Lions up, 2-0 at the break.
Lock Haven trimmed the lead to 2-1 with its only goal of the game, a Mandy Daschbach score in a scrum in front of the cage. It was the only goal allowed on the day by senior goalkeeper Megan Akstin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) who stopped four shots in the contest. Penn State put the game out of reach with two unassisted goals, the first from Hostetler at 57:47, and then one two minutes later by senior captain Natalie Berrena (State College, Pa.).
The Lions attacked the Lady Eagles early and often, tallying 16 shots to Lock Haven's eight. In addition, Penn State attempted 15 penalty corners to the Lady Eagles' two.
Nittany Lion head coach Char Morett continues to move closer to 300 career wins at Penn State, and after the victory over Lock Haven, has 295 under her belt at the University and 332 career wins overall.
