Nittany Lions in Second Place After First Day of Lady Northern Golf Tournament

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. September 24, 2005 - Two Penn State golfers are in the top 10 and Penn State is sitting in 2nd place after day one of the Lady Northern Golf Tournament held at the University of Indiana Golf Course this weekend.

The tournament began with 36 holes on Saturday, Sept. 24. The final 18 holes will be held on Sunday, Sept. 25. Penn State shot a combined 589 in the first two rounds, which ranked behind just Purdue (574.)

Sara Lester (Walnut Creek, Calif.) finished the first round with a 2-under 70, which put the redshirt freshman in first place entering the second round. She shot a 77 in the second round but still finished the day tied for ninth place. Amber Weinerth (Auburn, N.Y.) fired a 71 in the first round and was three spots behind Lester in fourth place after 18 holes. Weinerth, who is tied for sixth place, tallied a 74 in the second round to finish two over par going into the second day of the tournament.

Purdue's Maria Hernandez and Illinois State's Samantha Richdale lead the field heading into Sunday. Both carded 3-under par scores of 141 over the first two rounds.

In all, six Nittany Lions are competing in the Lady Northern. Evelyn Paik (Toronto, Ontario) put up Penn State's third-best score, and is tied for 16th place after a two-round score of 75-75 to open up play. Maggie Lester (Oswego, N.Y.) is in fourth place for Penn State and tied for 20th among the Lady Northern field with a 77-74 showing on Saturday. Lauren Lundy (Wayne, Pa.) carded a 79 in the first round but bounced back in the final 18 holes and put up a 73. Lundy is in 26th place entering the final round. Katrin Wolfe (Johnstown, Pa.) rounded out the Penn State roster with a 77-82, which puts her in a tie for 58th place.

Head coach Denise St. Pierre's Nittany Lions will compete in the second day of the tournament, which includes all 11 Big Ten teams, Illinois State and Notre Dame, on Sunday. Following Purdue and Penn State, Michigan State finished the day in third with a combined score of 592. Notre Dame (599) and Iowa (602) rounded out the top five team scores.
