UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. October 11, 2005 - State College Pennsylvania native and Penn State senior forward Natalie Berrena scored two goals Saturday at No. 12 Iowa, earning Big Ten field hockey Offensive Player of the Week accolades for her efforts. The award is the second this season for Berrena, who was also honored on Sept. 19 following a two-goal, five-assist performance over three games vs. Temple, Lafayette and West Chester.
Berrena's two goals helped Penn State to a 4-0 victory over Iowa. The win kept Penn State (13-1, 3-0) perfect in Big Ten play, and extended the team's winning streak to 13 games, the second-longest single-season win streak in program history. Only 1993's string of 15 in a row is longer.
Berrena's goals were her eighth and ninth on the season, which rank third on the team and sixth in the Big Ten. She is tied for fourth in the Conference in points with 24, and tied for fifth in assists (6). She is the only Nittany Lion, and one of only two players in the Big Ten, to rank among the Conference top 10 in goals, points and assists. She has scored in seven games this season, and has tallied two, two-goal outings. In addition, she has recorded a point in nine of the Lions' 13 games.
The award is the fifth player of the week award for Penn State this season. Berrena has won the honor twice, while Megan Akstin (Aug. 29), Sara Cahill (Sept. 29) and Annelise Legel (Oct. 3) have also been selected. Penn State's five selections is the most of any Big Ten institution this year.
The Nittany Lions return home on Saturday, Oct. 15 to take on No. 15 Michigan State. The game is slated to start at 12 p.m. Penn State will play two final home matches after that, first against Bucknell on Tues., Oct. 18 at 6 p.m., and then versus Ohio State on Saturday, Oct 22 at noon.
