UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. November 20, 2005 - Villanova scored seven points in the final 44 seconds of Sunday's game at Penn State to edge out the Lady Lions, 62-59, in front of 5,996 at the Bryce Jordan Center.
Junior Amanda Brown (Kennett Square, Pa.) led the Lady Lions (0-2) with 16 points in the contest, while freshman Mashea Williams (Erie, Pa.) added 13. The Lady Lions took a two-point lead with 3:16 to play when Brown hit a driving layup to put Penn State up, 57-55. The teams traded missed shot attempts over the next minute and change until Villanova's Liad Suez-Karni nailed a 3-pointer with 44 seconds on the clock to give the Wildcats a one-point advantage. Brown answered with another layup at the 25 second mark off a nifty pass from Brianne O'Rourke (Pittsburgh, Pa.), but the Wildcats came right back and Kate Dessart Mager hit a jumper to put Villanova up, 60-59. After two straight timeouts Penn State set up its offense and Brown was fouled on the play, giving her a one-and-one opportunity. She missed the front end and Dessart Mager hit two of her own foul shots with three seconds left to ice the game.
In the first half Penn State got hot early, hitting 10 of its first 20 shots to take a 29-18 lead with 6:26 left to play in the period. Villanova (2-0) rallied before the break, however, and ended the half on a 15-5 run to pull within one at 34-33. Kamela Gissendanner (Clairton, Pa.) led the team with nine points at halftime, while Brown chipped in eight before the break. The second half went back and forth with neither team taking more than a four-point lead.
For the game Penn State came out on top in several categories, including rebounding where the Lady Lions held a 32-25 edge. Penn State also made just 10 turnovers, while forcing Villanova into 11. The difference in the contest, however, came at the three-point line where Villanova went 10 for 20 compared to Penn State's 4 for 12 outing. Suez-Karni went 5-10 behind the stripe, hitting several key baskets including the late three to give Villanova the lead.
