University Park, Pa., Feb. 11, 2006- The Penn State women??s track and field team finished first at the Sykes Sabock Challenge Cup with a total of 111 points. Akron came in second with 82 points and Eastern Michigan finished third (77.5 points).
Senior and All-American Jennifer Leatherman (Yellville, Arkansas) finished first in the shot put with an NCAA provisional qualifying throw of 53-05. Leatherman also finished first yesterday in the 20 lb. weight throw (71-06.25). Sophomore Toya Woods (New Rochelle, New York) finished fourth in the shot put (45-00 1/2).
??Jen was definitely composed and confident in today??s competition,?? said assistant coach Dayna Holston Wenger. ??She had a great week at practice and really worked on the rhythm of her throw which was evident today. She had a throw of a lifetime. She really executed in her performance today and put her in a good position for the Big Ten Championships.??
Junior Lena Bettis (Riverside, California) finished second in the triple jump with a mark of 38-08 ?. Senior and All-American Molly Landreth (Newburyport, Massachusetts) finished fourth in the 3,000 meter run in a time of 9:54.86. Teammate and sophomore Nikki Bohnsack (Rockford, Michigan) finished seventh in the 3,000 meter run in a time of 10:11.23.
In the 200 meter dash junior Shana Cox (Westbury, New York) and senior Sara Shoaff (Harrisburg, Pennsylvania) finished first and second in the 200 meter dash. The women both ran NCAA provisional qualifying times of 23.71 and 23.82. Junior Briene Simmons (Decatur, Georgia) finished fourth in the 800 meter run in a time of 2:09.55.
The 4x400 meter relay team finished second in a time of 3:40.25. The relay team consisted of Cox, Simmons, freshman Aleesha Barber (Decatur, Georgia) and sophomore Dominique Blake (Bronx, New York). In the 600 meter run senior Cheryl Green (Ann Arbor, Michigan) finished third (1:32.89) and junior Kim Markel (Wexford, Pennsylvania) finished fifth (1:34.07).
Next up for the women??s track and field team is the Big Ten Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Wisconsin on February 25th and 26th. The meet is set to begin at 9:00 a.m.
