MADISON, Wisc.; February 16, 2005 - Penn State battled hard at Wisconsin but could not overcome its deeper opponent, falling 66-56 Thursday in Madison.

The Lady Lions dressed just eight players, and were without starter Charity Renfro (Las Vegas, Nev.), who is still recovering from a concussion sustained in practice, and Brittany Remmey (Doylestown, Pa.), who is out with a pulled hamstring.

With only three players on the bench, Penn State had to play a conservative defensive game to protect its slim numbers. Wisconsin, meanwhile, went deep into its roster, using a nine-player rotation. Penn State, which fell to 11-14, 5-9, was led by Amanda Brown (Kennett Square, Pa.), who tallied 14 points and six rebounds. Mashea Williams (Erie, Pa.) added 13, and Rashida Mark (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in eight to go along with a team and career-high 11 rebounds. All five of Wisconsin's starters reached double-digit scoring figures led by Danielle Ward's 16 points. Jolene Anderson tallied a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds for Wisconsin, which improved to 10-16, 4-10.

Despite their slim numbers, the Lady Lions played right with Wisconsin and tied the game at 32 points apiece at the 17-minute mark. But the Badgers' Ashley Josephson gave Wisconsin a big lift with back-top-back 3-pointers soon thereafter, and Lady Lion head coach Rene Portland called a 30-second timeout with her team down by five at the 15:43 mark. Wisconsin kept the pressure on, however, and built a 51-38 lead with 11 minutes to play that it kept over the next eight minutes. Penn State began to rally, however, and after 10 combined points from Williams and Brown, the Lady Lions were down by nine with just under four to play. Wisconsin kept the Lady Lions at arms length down the stretch, and Penn State never got closer than eight in the final four minutes.

In the first half Penn State played Wisconsin evenly through the first 12 minutes, but fell behind, 23-15 with six and a half minutes to play in the first half after allowing Wisconsin to put together an 8-0 run. The Lady Lions got help down the stretch from two likely sources: captains Brown and Kam Gissendanner (Clairton, Pa.), and one unlikely source: the freshman Mark. Mark scored the Lady Lions' last three buckets of the half, including a put-back at the buzzer to give Penn State a 27-25 lead at the break. She led all Penn State scorers with eight points to go along with seven rebounds in the first 20 minutes.

Penn State has two regular season games left, both of which are at home. First the Lady Lions host Northwestern on Thursday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. Next Penn State welcomes Ohio State in the regular season finale on Sunday Feb. 26 at 2 p.m.
