UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; February 22, 2006 - Both of Penn State's powerful fencing teams earned No. 2 rankings in the latest edition of the USFCA College Fencing Coaches Poll. Head coach Emmanuil Kaidanov's men's and women's teams both maintained lofty spots in the rankings.
The Nittany Lion men are No. 2, tied with Notre Dame and just behind No. 1 Ohio State. Harvard checks in at No. 4 with St. John's (5), Columbia (6), Princeton (7), Stanford (8), Penn (9) and Air Force (10) rounding out the top ten.
Kaidanov's men's team is 9-1 with wins over North Carolina, Rutgers, Princeton, New York University, Drew, Columbia, Penn, St. John's and Duke. Penn State's only loss was a 14-13 upset at the hands of Harvard.
The Nittany Lion men are being led by sophomore Arthur Urman (Maalot, Israel), with a 19-7 mark in the epee; sophomore Jeffrey Chang (Hong Kong, China), who is 17-7 in the foil; and sophomore Franz Boghicev (Dormagen, Germany), who is 14-1 in the saber.
The women's team is 10-1 with wins over North Carolina, Rutgers, Princeton, Harvard, New York University, Drew, Columbia, Penn, Temple and Duke. Penn State's only loss was a 14-13 upset loss to St. John's.
The Nittany Lion women are being led by senior Katarzyna Trzopek (Warsaw, Poland), who is 12-5 in the epee; senior Annekathrin Donath (Tauber, Germany), who is 23-7 in the foil; and junior Sophia Hiss (Oklahoma City, Okla.), who is 25-3 in the saber.
Penn State will return to NCAA action on Saturday, March 4, when it takes part in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals, hosted by Duke University.
