GAMBIER, Ohio; Feb. 3, 2006 ?C Seven first-place finishes helped propel the Penn State men's swimming and diving team to victory at Kenyon today. Despite a slow start, as Kenyon took first place in four of the first six events, the Lion men came out on top, 194-110.
Freshman Ryan DeWeese (Midlothian, Va.) placed first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:18.25. DeWeese also took first in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 4:38.17. Sophomore Josh Graham (Newport News, Va.) nabbed a first place finish in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4: 04.06.
Senior Shawn McLin (Sinking Spring, Pa.) placed first in the 100-yard backstroke, with a time of 50.48. Sophomore Kyle Miranda (Louisville, Colo.) took first place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 57.04.
A time of 45.80 earned freshman Sean Swanepoel (KZN, South Africa) a first place finish in the 100-yard freestyle. Junior Dan Kaiserian (Radnor, Pa.) and freshman Spencer Maglich (Sarasota, Fl.) helped the Nittany Lions pull in some points in the same event, taking second and third with times of 46.63 and 46.73, respectively.
McLin, Maglich, and Swanepoel combined efforts with senior Chris Ippoliti (Berwyn, Pa.) for a first place finish in the last event of the day. Their time of 1:24.38 secured them a first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
The Penn State men's swimming and diving team hits the road again tomorrow for an away meet with their Big Ten rivals, Ohio State, beginning at 10 a.m. It is the men's last dual meet of the season.
