UNIVERSITY PARK, PA ?C MARCH 4, 2006 ?C The Nittany Lion men??s tennis team was again victorious Saturday, winning their match at Penn State??s Indoor Tennis Center.
A seeming repeat of their last season meeting, Penn State squared off against Toledo Saturday morning, sweeping both the singles and doubles competitions for a 7-0 Penn State win. Only two Nittany Lions were forced into three-game sets, as Mark Barry (St. Charles, Ill.), Ryan Berger (Grand Rapids, Mich.), Adam Slagter (Austin, Texas) and James Dwyer (Peachtree City, Ga.) posted two-set victories vs. the Rockets.
Slagter, in his first year of collegiate competition, posted wins in singles and, paired with Barry, doubles competitions for an extraordinary outing.
??Adam did a great job getting on his man and staying on his man,?? said Nittany Lion head coach Bill Potoczny. ??He has been very strong in both singles and doubles. Overall our level of play was fine, but we still need some work on our body language when we??re faced with adversity.??
This victory marks the Lions?? sixth shutout in eight matches for the season. Men??s tennis has posted a 7-1 record this season, 1-1 in the Big Ten.
Penn State will travel to Florida for its spring trip this coming week, where the Lions will train at San Lando Park in Altamonte Springs and play two matches on Friday, March 10 vs. St. Peter??s College and Robert Morris. This is the team??s third consecutive trip to San Lando Park, with the Lions?? most recent outing resulting in a 7-0 victory over Villanova. The Nittany Lions will return home on Friday, March 17 when they take on the Duquesne Dukes at 4 p.m.
