University Park, Pa. April 17, 2006 ?? The Penn State women??s tennis team prepares for its regular-season finale this weekend. The Lions embark on their last road trip with a pair of matches first at the University of Michigan on Sat. April 22 at 11 a.m. and then at Michigan State on Sun. April 23 at 10 a.m.
Penn State ?? With an overall record of 8-10 on the season, the Lions strive to conclude the regular season with an even 10-10 record. Despite their 4-3 loss against the No. 33 Iowa Hawkeyes on Fri. April 14, the Lions fired back in full force and convincingly defeated conference foe, Minnesota, on Sun. April 16 with a score of 5-2. Sophomore Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) and freshman Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) each clinched two singles wins this weekend, while the rest of the Lions also displayed very strong, competitive play.
Foes ?? The No. 31 University of Michigan Wolverines (12-6, 6-2 Big Ten) are carrying a three-game winning streak in the Big Ten into competition this weekend. The Wolverines are led by the doubles duo of Nina Yaftali and Lindsey Howard. The pair recorded 12 doubles wins this season. Penn State holds an all-time series record of 4-15 against the Wolverines with its last win earned in the spring of ??01.
Penn State and Michigan State hold an almost even record throughout history, with the Lions?? 5-2 win last spring boosting Penn State up 9-8 in the series. The Spartans improved their season record to 13-8 and 3-5 in the Big Ten with a 4-3 upset over No. 73 Ohio State on Sun. April 16.
