UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. ?C April 21, 2006 ?C The No. 57 Penn State men??s tennis team improved to 14-5 (4-5 Big Ten) Friday afternoon, defeating No. 39 Michigan by way of a 5-2 decision at the Sarni Tennis Center.
Despite three hard-fought doubles matches by the Nittany Lions, the Wolverines took the doubles point winning two of three matches.
??After having match points in doubles and not winning the doubles point, I was really proud of our guys in that they came back and really did a great job in singles,?? said head coach Bill Potoczny.
Seniors Mark Barry (St. Charles, Ill.) and Malcolm Scatliffe (San Bernardino, Calif.) each posted wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, setting the tone for Penn State from the get-go in singles play. Both seniors battled their way through three-set matches to put the Nittany Lions up 2-1. Penn State went on to win the next three of four matches to give the Lions their fourth Big Ten victory of the season.
??The seniors did a great job inspiring their teammates and leading them in between singles and doubles,?? said Potoczny. ??Then they took care of business and won themselves at No. 1 and No. 2 singles.??
Today??s win snaps a three-match losing streak for the Nittany Lions, as they improve to 14-5 (4-5 Big Ten). With the loss, Michigan falls to 11-10 (5-4 Big Ten).
On Sunday, Penn State will face Michigan State in what will be the Nittany Lions?? last regular season match of the season. Action is set to begin at Noon at Penn State??s Sarni Tennis Center.
