No. 57 Men?' Tennis Team Ends Regular Season With 6-1 Win Over Michigan State

Senior day saw both Nittany Lion seniors Mark Barry and Malcolm Scatliffe win their doubles matches, with Barry going on to win his singles match at the No. 1 spot in Penn State's 6-1 win over Michigan State. The Nittany Lions finished the 2005-06 season with an overall record of 17-6 (5-5 Big Ten) and will travel to Minneapolis, Minn. next weekend for the Big Ten Championships.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. ?C April 23, 2006 ?C The Penn State men??s tennis team improved to 15-5 (5-5 Big Ten) Sunday afternoon, defeating Michigan State, 6-1 in the Nittany Lions?? last regular season match of the season.

Senior day saw both Nittany Lion seniors Mark Barry (St. Charles, Ill.) and Malcolm Scatliffe (San Bernardino, Calif.) win their doubles matches, with Barry going on to win his singles match at the No. 1 spot.

??Mark beat an outstanding player in Nick Rinks and really won the match by sheer toughness,?? said head coach Bill Potoczny. ??He did a great job pulling out a win that we really needed and it will really help him for the national rankings as well.??

Penn State took the doubles point, winning all three matches vs. the Spartans. Singles competition saw Barry, Ryan Berger (Grand Rapids, Mich.), Michael James (Clifton, Va.), Adam Slagter (Austin, Texas) and Brendan Lynch (North Potomac, Md.) all come away victorious, with four of five matches being two-set victories.

The Nittany Lions finish regular season play with a 17-6 overall record, including fall matches. Penn State finished 5-5 in Big Ten play for the second consecutive year, posting a spring record of 15-5. With today??s loss, Michigan State falls to 7-16 (1-8 Big Ten).

The No. 57 Nittany Lions head to the Big Ten Championships at Minnesota on Thursday. First up for No. 6 seed Penn State are the No. 11 Iowa Hawkeyes. The winner of that match advances to Friday's showdown with No. 3 seed Minnesota.
