RICHMOND, Va. ?C May 13, 2006 ?C The Penn State men??s tennis team fell to the University of Washington, 4-2 on Saturday in NCAA Tournament first-round action held at Virginia Commonwealth University??s Thalhimer Tennis Center.
The No. 3-seeded Nittany Lions came out strong in doubles competition, with the duo of Mark Barry (St. Charles, Ill.) and Adam Slagter (North Potomac, Md.) posting an 8-6 win at the No. 1 position. The team of Brad Hunter (Atlanta, Ga.) and Ryan Berger (Grand Rapids, Mich.) followed suit at the No. 2 spot, also posting an 8-6 victory for the Lions. The No. 3 match did not finish, as Penn State came away with the doubles point.
Singles competition saw the No. 2-seeded Huskies bounce back from the early 1-0 deficit, picking up two-straight wins at the No.1 and No. 2 spots before Slagter would defeat Daniel Chu at the two spot to pull the Lions even with the Huskies at two apiece.
It was then that Washington posted back-to-back three-set wins at the fifth and sixth singles spots to break the 2-2 tie, giving the Huskies a 4-2 victory as the three-spot match was abandoned.
The No. 45 Nittany Lions finish their season at 19-8 overall while the No. 21 Huskies advance to the regional semifinals to face No. 12 Virginia Commonwealth tomorrow at 1 p.m. EST.
