University Park, Pa. - May 20, 2006 - Long-time Penn State cross country and track and field coach Harry Groves was honored Saturday night at an appreciation dinner. More than 300 friends, colleagues and former athletes packed the Multi-Sport Building to honor Groves, who is retiring at the end of this season after 38 years at Penn State and 53 in coaching.
A five-time Coach of the Year, Groves is not only one of the most respected coaches in the NCAA, but is widely considered one of the legends of international coaching as well. So impressive are his accolades that he was inducted into the United States Track and Field Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2001.
The event featured comments from Master of Ceremonies Bill Whittaker, two different video presentations as well as various speakers and gift presentations. An announcement recognizing the generous donation of Kenneth Brinker to Harry Groves Track/Cross Country Endowed Scholarship was also made.
