GREENSBORO, N.C.; May 27, 2006 ?C The Penn State women??s outdoor track and field team finished seventh at the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field East Regional Championships. Redshirt-junior and All-American Shana Cox (Westbury, N.Y.) sprinted to a first place finish in the 400-meter dash, to better her personal best in the event with a time of 51.30. Her first place finish scored 10 points for the team.
Senior and All-American Jennifer Leatherman (Yellville, Ark.) captured second in the hammer throw Saturday afternoon with a mark of 202??02?? (61.62 meters), scoring eight points for the Lion women. She took eighth in the discus with a mark of 157??09?? (48.08 meters). Additionally, Leatherman finished sixth in the shot put Friday afternoon with a mark of 51??04.25 (15.66 meters).
The 3,000-meter steeplechase saw senior and All-American Molly Landreth (Newburyport, Mass.) capture third place with a time of 10:21.22, bettering her eighth place finish at the 2005 NCAA East Regional. Redshirt-junior Briene Simmons (Decatur, Ga) finished fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:07.18.
The 4x400-meter relay team placed fifth. Cox and Simmons along with senior Sara Shoaff (Harrisburg, Pa.) and sophomore Dominique Blake (Bronx, N.Y.) scored four points in a time of 3:34.92.
The regional was held at Irwin Belk Track inside Aggie stadium. N.C. A&T became the first Historically Black College or University to host a NCAA track regional.
The NCAA Track and Field Championships will be contested June 7-10 in Sacramento, Calif. The total list of NCAA qualifiers will be announced Tuesday.
