Women?' Track and Field Begins Qualifying at 2006 NCAA Championships

Ranked No. 1 in the nation, redshirt-junior sprinter and All-American Shana Cox (Westbury, N.Y.) finished first in the 400-meter preliminary (51.48), allowing her to advance to the semifinals Friday evening. The 2006 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships continue through Saturday.

SACRAMENTO, Calif.; June 7, 2006 ?C The 2006 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships kicked off Wednesday morning with preliminary competition lasting throughout the day. The championships are being held in Sacramento, Calif. at the A.G. Spanos Sports Complex June 7-10.

Ranked No. 1 in the nation, redshirt-junior sprinter and All-American Shana Cox (Westbury, N.Y.) is in first place after preliminary action in the 400-meter dash (51.48). The semifinals will take place Friday evening.

Ranked eighth in the nation in the 800-meter run (2:04.72), redshirt-junior Briene Simmons (Decatur, Ga) finished ninth in the 800-meter preliminaries in 2:05.95. Simmons now advances to Thursday??s semifinals. Senior and All-American Molly Landreth (Newburyport, Mass.) placed 12th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase preliminary (10:16.45), qualifying her for the finals Friday night.

The 2006 NCAA Division I Men??s and Women??s Outdoor Track and Field Championships will feature 4 1/2 hours of live television coverage this weekend. This is the first time since 1982 that the NCAA Track and Field Championships have been televised live on network television.

CBS will air 2 1/2 hours of live coverage (3:30 to 6 p.m. EST) on Saturday, June 10, the final day of the four-day collegiate championships. CSTV will broadcast two hours of competition (8 p.m. to 10 p.m. EST) on Friday, June 9. This is the first time the next-to-last day of the NCAA Championships have been televised live. The 4 1/2 hours of live coverage mark the most live coverage in the history of NCAA Division I Track and Field. This marks the second time that the women??s portion of the meet will be televised.
