UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; Sept. 22, 2006 ?C Penn State??s women??s soccer team opened up Big Ten play with a 3-2 win over Michigan State in overtime after the Spartans tied the game with four seconds remaining in regulation. Redshirt-freshman Ashley Myers (Bel Air, Md.) knocked home the game-winning goal in the 93rd minute of the contest off of a Katie Schoepfer (Waterford, Conn.) pass to clinch the victory.
In front of 1,187 fans - the second largest crowd of the season at Jeffrey Field - the Nittany Lions jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead when Ali Krieger (Dumfries, Va.) scored off a scramble in front of the net in the fifth minute of the first half. Converted to defense for most of the season, Krieger??s goal was the first of her senior campaign. The Spartans struck back with goal of their own in the first half off a corner kick in the 34th minute to even the score at 1-1.
The Nittany Lions increased their lead in the second half when Aubrey Aden-Buie (Allentown, Pa.) scored on a penalty kick to give the Nittany Lions a 2-1 edge during the 71st minute. The Lions looked set for their first win in Big Ten play this season, but the Spartans rallied with four seconds remaining in regulation. Lauren Sinacola scored in traffic to knot the game at two, sending the contest into an extra period.

In overtime, the Nittany Lions wasted little time to get the game-winning goal on the scoreboard. Myers fielded Schoepfer??s pass and drilled it home for the first victory in Big Ten conference play this season. The goal was Myers?? second of the season. With the win, women??s soccer improves to 5-2-2 on the season and 1-0 in the Big Ten. Michigan State is now 4-4-1 on the year and fall to 0-1 in the conference,
The Nittany Lions will welcome Michigan to Jeffrey Field on Sunday, with the contest slated to get underway at noon. The Wolverines will enter the game with a 4-3-2 record on the season.
