CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.; October 27, 2006 - Penn State swimmers and divers captured six first place finishes out of 20 events for both men and women on the first night of the two-day Virginia quad meet. Eighteen more events will be contested on Saturday to complete the meet, which includes Penn State, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Clemson.
Courtney Adlam (Ambler, Pa.) won the three-meter springboard diving competition to start out the day for Penn State, topping 12 other divers with 245.80 total points and winning by over five points. Kimberlee Peifer (Camp Hill, Pa.) placed seventh and freshman Jocelyn Avery (Norwalk, Conn.), competing in her first collegiate meet, finished 11th. Both Adlam and Peifer tied for third on the one-meter with 233.25.
Mike Alderman (Arlington, Va.) had another strong performance as he captured second place on both the one and three-meter boards for the men. He scored a 286.30 on the three-meter, topping his previous score in the three-meter this year by 3.5 points, and a 259.20 on the one-meter. Josh Myers (Hatfield, Pa.) took fourth in the one-meter and seventh in the three-meter while Pat Bukowski (North East, Pa.) finished eighth in the one and ninth in the three-meter.
Kaitlin O??Brien (Caldwell, N.J.) won her first race of the year as she topped the field in the 200 IM in 2:04.32, just missing out on an NCAA ??B?? qualifying time by .19 of a second. Penn State also had the fourth through sixth place finishers in the 200 IM in Karie Haglund (Marietta, Ga.), Kailey Morris (Lewisburg, Pa.) and Kelly Nelson (West Chester, Pa.).
In the 500 freestyle, Nikki Collins (Carmel, Ind.) topped the field by nearly two seconds, swimming an NCAA ??B?? provisional time of 4:50.62 to win her second race of the year after winning the 1000 free last week at West Virginia. Sarah Baker (Fairfax, Va.) came in fifth and Claire Hawley (Barnstable, Mass.) seventh in the 500 free.

Penn State??s women dominated the 200 butterfly as the Nittany Lions placed first, second and third in the event with all three swimmers going under the NCAA ??B?? cut. Kailey Morris won her first collegiate event by swimming it in 2:01.40. Haglund, who also swam a ??B?? cut last week at West Virginia in the 200 fly, came in at 2:01.73 while Nelson was just behind her in 2:01.86. Illustrating the Nittany Lions?? dominance in this event at this meet, the fourth place finisher finished in 2:04.51, nearly three seconds behind Nelson in third place.
The Nittany Lion women??s 400 medley relay team of Michelle Myers (Boalsburg, Pa.), Lyndsey Smith (Westminster, Md.), Nelson and Molly Crispell (Boalsburg, Pa.) came in at 3:46.78 for the fifth first place finish of the night for the women. The other medley relay team of Morris, Abby Hoisington (Leawood, Kans.), Haglund and Jessica Barnes (Glenmoore, Pa.) placed fifth.
Other highlights for the women included a second place finish in the 200 free relay by Genie Cheng (Oak Park, Calif.), Rachel Ahrenhold (Blue Bell, Pa.), Crispell and Barnes. Lyndsey Smith finished second in the 100 breaststroke while Hoisington placed fourth. Three Penn Staters captured third through fifth place in the 200 backstroke in Daphne Skelos (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), Erin Morris (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Barnes.

The Penn State men??s half of the first night of the meet was highlighted by Pat Schirk's (Pottstown, Pa.) first place finish in the 200 backstroke at 1:48.06. The next-best finishes for the Nittany Lion men were by Kyle Miranda (Louisville, Colo.), who placed third in the 100 breaststroke in :56.97, and third place finishes by both the 200 freestyle and 400 medley relay teams. The 200 free relay team of Sean Swanepoel (Lincoln Mead, So. Africa), Dan Kaiserian (Radnor, Pa.), Spencer Maglich (Sarasota, Fla.) and Vincent Reydams (Falls Church, Va.) finished in 1:23.62 while the 400 medley relay team of Schirk, Miranda, Basil Kaaki (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia) and Swanepoel finished in 3:22.65.
Other highlights for the men on day one included a fourth place finish for Tim Williams (North Bend, Ohio) in the 200 IM and a fifth place finish for him in the 200 fly. Swanepoel also finished fifth in the 100 freestyle.
In the dual meets, the women lead all three other schools while the men trail. On the women??s side, Penn State leads Clemson 129-57, Virginia 100-86, and Virginia Tech 119-67. On the men??s side, Penn State trails Clemson 101-85, Virginia 109-77, and Virginia Tech 106.5-79.5.
