Molly Crispell won the 200 freestyle and was a part of both first place medley relay teams at the Virginia quad meet this weekend.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.; October 28, 2006 ?C After winning six events on the first night of the weekend quad meet at Virginia, the Penn State women??s swimming and diving team picked up five more first-place finishes on day two on Saturday and won all three of the dual meets with the other three teams at the meet. Over the two-day event at Virginia, the Nittany Lion women finished first in 11 out of the 19 events that were contested.
The men??s part of the day for the Nittany Lions was highlighted by another first-place finish by backstroker Pat Schirk (Pottstown, Pa.), who won the 100 backstroke after he captured first in the 200 back on Friday night.
As a team, the women defeated Clemson 245.5-107.5, topped the host Cavaliers 192-161, and also beat Virginia Tech 243-110. The three dual meet wins improve the Nittany Lions?? dual meet record to 4-0 on the year.
Day two of the meet started off with the 200 medley relay team of Michelle Myers (Boalsburg, Pa.), Abby Hoisington (Leawood, Kans.), Kelly Nelson (West Chester, Pa.) and Molly Crispell (Boalsburg, Pa.) capturing first place in 1:44.94, which gave the women a sweep in both medley relay events after also winning the 200 medley relay last night. Myers, Nelson and Crispell both swam on both medley relay first place teams while Hoisington replaced Lyndsey Smith (Westminster, Md.) in the 200 this morning.
Nikki Collins (Carmel, Ind.) won her second event of the quad meet as she came in first in the 1000 freestyle in 9:56.89. It was her third first place finish of the year and her second in the 1000.
Kaitlin O'Brien won both the 400 IM and 200 breaststroke on day two of the Virginia meet, giving her three first place finishes on the weekend.After winning the 200 IM last night, Kaitlin O??Brien (Caldwell, N.J.) won two more events on Saturday, making it a clean sweep in the individual medley events by winning the 400 IM and also adding the 200 breaststroke as a win. O??Brien won the 400 IM in an NCAA ??B?? provisional time of 4:19.81 and her winning time in the 200 breast was 2:18.05. O??Brien??s NCAA ??B?? cut was the fifth NCAA ??B?? time of the weekend for the Nittany Lion women. Kailey Morris (Lewisburg, Pa.) finished second behind O??Brien in the 400 IM in 4:24.79 and in the 200 breast, Clare Clemens (Staten Island, N.Y.) placed fourth in 2:19.77.
In the 200 freestyle, Crispell captured first place in 1:51.12, giving her three first place finishes in the meet as well after she was also a part of both first place medley relay teams. Collins, Jessica Barnes (Glenmoore, Pa.) and Sarah Baker (Fairfax, Va.) finished fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively, behind Crispell in the 200 free.
In the final women??s event of the day, the 400 freestyle relay team of Nelson, Crispell, Karie Haglund (Marietta, Ga.), and Myers finished second in 3:28.31. Other highlights for the women included a strong performance in the 100 backstroke as freshmen Daphne Skelos (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and Myers finished third and fourth, respectively, with Erin Morris (Fort Wayne, Ind.) taking sixth. The Nittany Lions took second and third place in the 100 butterfly as Nelson placed second in 56:28 and Haglund took third in 56:43.
On the men??s side, Schirk made it a sweep in the backstroke events as he won the 100 back in :50.77 after capturing first in the 200 back last night. Other high points for the men included a third place finish by David Kraft (Vienna, Va.) in the 1000 free in 9:27.33. Freshman Ben Ryan (State College, Pa.) also took fifth in the 1000 free in 9:34.32. Kyle Miranda (Louisville, Colo.) placed third in the 200 breaststoke after also finishing third in the 100 breaststroke last night. Sean Biedermann (Colorado Springs, Colo.) took sixth in the 200 free. The 400 free relay team of Dan Kaiserian (Radnor, Pa.), Schirk, Vincent Reydams (Falls Church, Va.) and Sean Swanepoel (Lincoln Mead, So. Africa) placed fourth.
Pat Schirk won both the 100 and 200 backstroke events at the Virginia quad meet for the men's team.Tim Williams (North Bend, Ohio) finished off a strong meet by placing second in the 400 IM with a time of 4:02.41. He also finished fourth in the 200 IM and fifth in the 200 fly last night.
In the dual meets, the men lost to Clemson 201-152, to Virginia 229-124, and to Virginia Tech 189.5-163.5.
The men??s and women??s teams will split up for their next meets as the women return home to host the Big Cat Invitational next weekend, November 4-5 at McCoy Natatorium. The men will be off next weekend before heading to Purdue for a meet featuring the Boilermakers as well as Utah, Georgia and Louisville the weekend of November 10-11.
