Men Lead Three of Four Dual Meets After First Night of Purdue Duals

Dan Kaiserian finished second in three events, two relays and one individual event, as Penn State leads three of its four dual meets after one night at the Purdue Duals.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.; November 10, 2006 - The Penn State men??s swimming and diving team got off to an outstanding start on the first night of the two-day Purdue Duals meet. The Nittany Lions lead three of their four dual meets after action on Friday night in the five-team event. Pat Schirk (Pottstown, Pa.) captured his third first place finish of the year as he continues to dominate the backstroke events in which he swims, and Dan Kaiserian (Radnor, Pa.) had three second place finishes, two in relays and one in an individual event. As a team, the Nittany Lions also captured four second place finishes on night one.

Penn State leads host Purdue by a narrow 86-81 margin while the Lions also lead Utah and Louisville by much wider margins, 115-52 and 127-39, respectively. The Nittany Lions also trail Georgia 102-65.

After winning both the 100 and 200 backstroke events at Penn State??s last meet for the full men??s team two weekends ago at Virginia, Schirk will have an opportunity to do the same thing again tomorrow after he won the 200 back in 1:48.49 to highlight the first night of competition for the Nittany Lions. Teammate Dan Fimbianti (Mahwah, N.J.) came in just behind Schirk in 1:49.88 to finish third.

The Nittany Lions also had four second place finishes on night one, two by relay teams and two by individuals. The 200 free relay team of Basil Kaaki (Ras Kanura, Saudi Arabia), Vincent Reydams (Falls Church, Va.), Sean Swanepoel (Lincoln Mead, So. Africa) and Kaiserian finished second in 1:23.02 while the 400 medley relay team of Schirk, Kyle Miranda (Louisville, Colo.), Tim Williams (North Bend, Ohio) and Kaiserian also placed second in 3:20.74, just .69 of a second behind first place Georgia.

In the 100 free, Kaiserian topped her previous best time from this season by nearly a second, swimming to second place in :45.67, .89 of a second faster than his previous best this year. Williams continued his strong swimming as of late in the butterfly as he finished second in the 200 fly in 1:49.23.

Penn State swimmers also put in strong performances in several of the other events. The trio of David Kraft (Vienna, Va.), Dito Calderon (Bowie, Md.) and Chris Sullivan (Naples, Fla.) finished 3-4-5, respectively, in the 500 freestyle. Kraft swam it in 4:33.99, nearly two and a half seconds better than his previous best time this year. Miranda finished third in the 100 breaststroke in :56.88, his best time of the year. He has now finished third in every breaststroke event that he has swam his year. Sean Swanepoel came in fifth in the 100 free behind Kaiserian in :46.40.

In the diving events, Mike Alderman (Arlington, Va.) finished fourth in the three-meter springboard with a score of 297.00. Coming in behind him for Penn State was Pat Bukowski (North East, Pa.) in 11th place and Josh Myers (Hatfield, Pa.) in 13th. The women??s diving team also traveled to compete in this event and in the one-meter, Kimberlee Peifer (Camp Hill, Pa.) was the top Penn State finisher in sixth place with a score of 218.10. Courtney Adlam (Ambler, Pa.) placed eighth and Jocelyn Avery (Norwalk, Conn.) came in tenth.
