Four Field Hockey Student-Athletes Named All-Americans

Annelise Legel added a third team All-American selection to her first team All-Big Ten and first team All-Mideast Region selections this year.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; November 20, 2006 - Four members of the Penn State field hockey team were named All-Americans by the National Field Hockey Coaches?? Association (NFHCA), which announced its All-American teams on Monday. Junior Kiersten Wood (Lititz , Pa.), who was a third team All-American last year, was named to the first team as she becomes Penn State??s 47th first team All-American. It also marks the 22nd straight year that Penn State has had at least one first team All-American.

Additionally, sophomores Jen Beaumont (Chalfont, Pa.) and Jen Long (Doylestown, Pa.) were both named second team All-Americans while senior Annelise Legel (Morgantown, Pa.) was named to the third team. The four selections for Penn State is tied for the third most in any one season in school history and is the most since 2002 when Penn State also had four All-Americans (two first team and two third team) en route to its appearance in the national championship game. Penn State now has had 78 all-time All-Americans.

Just as with the All-Region selections that were announced last week, Penn State tied for the second-most of any team in the country with its four behind only Maryland??s five. The Nittany Lions tied with Duke and Wake Forest for the second-most selections. In the All-Region teams announced last week, the Nittany Lions tied with Duke for the second-most picks with seven, behind only Maryland??s eight.

Jen Beaumont adds a second team All-American selection to her first team All-Mideast Region honor.

Wood will enter her senior season next year with a resume already impressive enough for a complete career. Now a two-time All-American, she is also a two-time first team All-Mideast Region selection and a two-time first team All-Big Ten selection as well. She was also the Big Ten Freshman of the Year two years ago. This year, she was also named to the Big Ten All-Tournament team after scoring two goals, both game-winners, and recording an assist in Penn State??s run to the conference championship game. On the year, Wood tied for third on the team with seven goals and was fourth on the team with 20 points. She also recorded six assists.

Jen Long was named a second team All-American as well after her first team All-Mideast Region selection.

Beaumont finished fifth in the country and first in the Big Ten in goals against average this year at 1.12. She also led the conference in shutouts and fewest goals allowed per game while playing every minute in goal for the Nittany Lions this season. She was also second in the Big Ten in save percentage and had two long streaks this year in which she did not allow a goal. The first one spanned 177:07 and the second one went 260:47. Last week, she was also named first team All-Mideast Region.

Long, who was also a first team All-Mideast Region pick and was a second team All-Big Ten selection, was one of the main anchors of the strong Penn State defense this year. She contributed greatly to Penn State??s conference-leading goals against average and eight shutouts and also tied for first on the team with eight assists and she served as the stopper on penalty corners for most of the year. Long is also a member of the United State Under-21 National Team.

Legel, who was also a first team All-Big Ten and first team All-Mideast Region selection, follows in her older sister Timarie??s footsteps with her All-American selection as Timarie was a three-time All-American (one third team, two second team). Annelise changed positions this past year, moving into the midfield from her forward position. As a result, her offensive numbers went down as she recorded four goals and three assists for 11 points, but she also contributed to the team??s defensive effort that saw the team finish the year tops in the Big Ten in most defensive categories. Legel recently played in the NFHCA Senior All-Star game this past Saturday in Winston-Salem, N.C.
