| Amanda Brown pulled down 15 rebounds in addition to scoring 29 points. |
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; December 7, 2006 ?C The Lady Lions entered the game against Xavier with an impressive all-time record of 147-17 against current Atlantic 10 teams, but the first meeting between Penn State and the Musketeers needed overtime to be decided.
The Lady Lions ripped off the first five points of the extra period and got big three-pointers from Tyra Grant (Youngstown, Ohio) and Adrienne Squire (Indianapolis, Ind.) down the stretch to pull away for a 73-66 win in the last game of 2006 at the Bryce Jordan Center.
The brightest star of the game was Amanda Brown (Kennett Square, Pa.), who tied a career-high with 29 points, pulled down 15 rebounds and dished out a career-high tying five assists. The dominant performance was Brown??s 12th career double-double and third of the still-young season.
Grant continued her sensational rookie campaign, scoring 20 points to go along with an assist and three rebounds and Squire chipped in 15 points.
5,787 fans saw a back-and-forth affair that included 13 lead changes; the game was tied, 38-38, with 13 minutes remaining in the second half when Penn State scored eight consecutive points to create a cushion that didn't evaporate until the final moments. Brown keyed the run, making three buckets and blocking a shot to put Penn State comfortably ahead.
Still, the swashbuckling Musketeers ?C led by Suntana Granderson??s 30 points ?C would not go away quietly. Xavier battled back to tie the game, 62-62, by scoring the last six points before overtime. The Lady Lions had the ball for the last shot in the waning seconds of regulation but Brown could not get off a shot before the buzzer.
Penn State now plays consecutive road contests against Mississippi, Georgetown, Illinois and Purdue to close out December before returning home on Jan. 4 to play Northwestern.
