EAST LANSING, MICH.; February 1, 2007 ?? The season??s road woes continued for the Lady Lions (11-12, 4-6) as Penn State dropped a 76-49 decision at #RV/23 Michigan State (16-6, 7-2) Thursday night. The Spartans shot 50% from the field on the game (18-of-55), including a 50% mark from three-point range (8-of-16).
Freshman guard Tyra Grant (Youngstown, Ohio) had a team-high 22 points, including a trio of three-pointers, to go along with three assists, four rebounds, two blocks and a steal. Senior post player Amanda Brown (Kennett Square, Pa.) also reached double figures with 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting. She added seven rebounds and notched a career-high four steals in the loss.
The Spartans kept the momentum from their hot-shooting first half as Victoria Lucas-Perry knocked down a pair of jumpers in the first four minutes to extend the Michigan State lead to 54-31. After the first official timeout, the Lady Lions found an offensive spark as Brown connected on three consecutive lay-ups and Grant drained a three-pointer to cut the Michigan State lead to 17 points at 57-40 with 11:03 to go in the game. After chipping away at the lead, a dry spell in the middle portion of the second half spelled doom for the Lady Lions as four points by Lucas-Perry and four tallies by Jefferson extended the MSU lead to 25 points (65-40) with 7:46 on the clock. The Lady Lions could pull no closer and both teams seemingly lost touch with their offense in the final four minutes as they combined for 11 points en route to the final score.
Penn State quickly fell behind as Jefferson connected on her first two shots in the first minute of the game to put the Spartans up 4-0 and they would extend the lead to 10-3 with 17 minutes remaining in the half, led by Jefferson??s eight points during the run. The Lady Lions responded and went on an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to take their first lead of the game at 13-10 with 13:46 left on the clock. Grant and Brown contributed six and four points, respectively, during the run. However, the Spartans found their three-point shooting stroke and went on a 19-3 run which included four three-pointers. The Lady Lions would cut the lead back to single digits at 31-22 with 6:58 left in the half, but the Spartans, who shot 56.8% in the first half, continued their strong play and entered the locker room at the half with a 48-29 lead. Grant had a team-best nine points in the opening frame.
Lucas-Perry led three Spartans in double figures with 20 points. Jefferson (16) and Rene Haynes (15) also hit double digits in the scoring column for Michigan State.
