NEW YORK CITY, N.Y., February 2, 2007 ?C The Nittany Lion track and field teams began competition at the highly anticipated New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the Armory in New York City on Friday. The Lions produced several commendable performances on a day that saw several NCAA-leading marks throughout the field.

Sophomore Aleesha Barber (Decatur, Ga.) clocked the seventh-best time in the 60-meter hurdle preliminaries, earning a spot in tomorrow??s event final.

Senior Ron Jules (Tom??s River, N.J.) won his heat of the 60 hurdles in 8.02, good for ninth overall. Jules?? performance also snagged a slot in tomorrow??s consolation final.

In the jumps, junior Lena Bettis (Riverside, Calif.) posted a personal-indoor best 19-8 (5.99m) in the long jump, bettering her previous career record by nearly a foot to take third place in the collegiate section.

Senior Amber Strouse (State College, Pa.), who hit the NCAA provisional standard in the pentathlon last weekend, tied for runner-up honors in the college division of the women??s high jump, clearing 5-6 (1.68m).

A pair of Nittany Lions managed top 10 finishes in the women??s 1,000-meters, with Shannon Van Dyke (Acton, Mass.) and Leah Rosenfeld (Ridgefield, Conn.) placing ninth and 10th overall, running 2:57.11, and 2:58.00, respectively. Freshman Mike Cadau (Mahanoy City, Pa.) clocked a personal-best 1:05.12 to finish 11th in the 500-meter dash.
