COLUMBUS, Ohio; February 17, 2007 - After advancing at least one swimmer to the finals in all three preliminary events on the first day of the Big Ten Men??s Swimming and Diving Championships yesterday, the Penn State men??s swimming and diving team did the same thing on the second day of the championships on Saturday, as at least one swimmer advanced to the finals of all five events in the Saturday morning prelims.
Dito Calderon advanced to the ??B?? finals of the 400 IM for the second straight year as he finished 15th in the prelims with a career-best time of 3:57.93. Tim Williams advanced to his first Big Ten finals event in the 100 butterfly as he swam a career-best of :48.87 to squeeze into the last spot in the ??B?? finals, finishing 16th. Williams missed last year??s Big Ten championships due to sickness.
Two Nittany Lions advanced to the finals of the 100 backstroke, led by Pat Schirk, who finished sixth in :48.18. Schirk, who swam an NCAA ??A?? automatic qualifying time in the 100 back last night on the opening leg of the 400 medley relay, will swim in the ??A?? final while teammate Dan Fimbianti will swim in the ??B?? final after finishing 14th in a career-best time of :49.56.
Two more Nittany Lions advanced to their respective finals as they both swam new NCAA ??B?? cuts. In the 100 breaststroke, Kyle Miranda advanced to the finals for the second straight year as he finished 11th in a season-best time of :54.93. He will swim in the ??B?? final as will Sean Biedermann in the 200 free, who finished 11th in a time of 1:37.67, another career-best for him after he swam his best career time in the 200 IM yesterday.
