Brown a Finalist for the Lowe?' Senior CLASS Award

Amanda Brown.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; February 22, 2007 ?? Senior post player Amanda Brown (Kennett Square, Pa.) is one of 10 women??s basketball finalists for the Lowe??s Senior CLASS Award. The award is presented annually to the NCAA Division I male and female senior basketball player who excels both on and off the court.

Brown joins Duke??s Alison Bales and Lindsey Harding, Ohio State??s Jessica Davenport, Vanderbilt??s Dee Davis, Maryland??s Shay Doron, Purdue??s Katie Gearlds, Navy??s Kate Hobbs, North Carolina??s Ivory Latta and South Carolina??s Shay Murphy as the 10 women??s finalists for the prestigious award.

Finalists were selected from a list of 30 candidates based on personal qualities that define a complete student-athlete. While the on-court performance thus far during the college basketball season was a factor in determining the finalists, the off-court areas of focus for the award include classroom, character and community.

The finalists will be placed on the Lowe??s Senior CLASS Award ballot for a nationwide vote during the NCAA Tournament in March. Fan balloting will be coupled with votes from coaches, media and sponsors to determine the male and female recipients. Winners will be announced during the men??s and women??s respective Final Four weekends.

Brown is the second on the team in scoring at a 14.0 per game clip, which is tied for ninth in the Big Ten. Additionally, she leads the Big Ten in rebounding (10.1), is third in field goal percentage (.588) and is sixth in blocked shots (1.6). Brown has accounted for 12 double-doubles this season, including a league-best nine in Big Ten play. The Montreal native recently became just the third player in school history to have 1,000 points, 700 rebounds and 150 blocks. In the classroom, Brown is a two-time ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District selection and a two-time Academic All-Big Ten choice. Brown, who has played for Team Canada each of the last three summers, earned the Lady Lion Academic Achievement Award in 2004 and 2006

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the award was launched during the 2001-02 season to honor the attributes of college basketball seniors who remain committed to their university and pursue the many rewards that a senior season can bring. Sponsored by Lowe??s, the award has already reached its sixth year.

Recipients of the women??s award include Sue Bird of Connecticut (2002), LaToya Thomas of Mississippi State (2003), Alana Beard of Duke (2004), Kendra Wecker of Kansas State (2005) and Seimone Augustus of LSU (2006).

The Lady Lions return to the Bryce Jordan Center for ??Senior Day?? on Sunday, Feb. 25 against Indiana at 2 p.m. The Lady Lions will also celebrate Fan Appreciation Day and National Girls and Women in Sports Day at the Indiana game.
