UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; April 20, 2007 - The Penn State women's lacrosse team suffered a tough loss to American Lacrosse Conference rival Ohio State (8-5, 1-2) Friday evening at Jeffrey Field, falling in the game's waning moments by a score of 9-8. With the setback, the Nittany Lions drop to 8-6 on the season and 0-3 in ALC play.
Sophomore Kerry Shea (Baltimore, Md.) provided Penn State with an early 1-0 lead, netting her 23rd goal of the season less than three minutes into the contest. Just over two minutes later, sophomore Marisa Lozano (Pittsburgh, Pa.) took a pass from freshman Mary LeNoir (Timonium, Md.) and found net to extend the Lions' advantage to 2-0.
After Amanda Shimp got Ohio State on the scoreboard at the 23:43 mark, the sister duo of Kerry and Linsey Shea (Baltimore, Md.) hooked up on a scoring play and freshman Maria Valderas (Catonsville, Md.) put home her seventh goal of the year.
With Penn State up 4-1 half way through the opening period, Ohio State held firm and then mounted a comeback. The Buckeyes would score the next three goals, tying the game with 1:40 remaining in the first half. However, at the one-minute mark, senior Lindsay Dutch (Ellicott City, Md.) fed Linsey Shea with a nicely-placed pass and the junior netted her second goal of the game. At the break, Penn State clung to a tenuous 5-4 lead.
Ohio State bolted from the gates in the second half, scoring three-straight goals over a span of six minutes to take a 7-5 lead. Kerry Shea then trimmed that advantage by one with an unassisted goal with 21:24 remaining in the game. After 10 minutes of scoreless, back-and-forth play, the Buckeyes went up by two goals again with a score. Refusing to back down, Lindsay Dutch took the game on her shoulders and netted the next two goals to knot the affair at 8-8.
Penn State had its scoring opportunities in the game's final four minutes but could not convert. Gaining possession of the ball with less than one minute remaining, Ohio State held the ball for a final shot and Jessica Patane found net as time expired to give the Buckeyes the win.
For the game, Penn State outshot Ohio State, 29-18, and possessed a 14-4 advantage in draw controls. However, the Lions incurred 11 turnovers, as compared to the Buckeyes' five, and converted on just one of six free position attempts.
The Nittany Lions will make their second trip of the season to Baltimore next week, traveling to face No. 14 Johns Hopkins (8-5, 1-1) on Fri., April 27 (5 p.m.) in a critical ALC contest. A year ago, Penn State knocked off the Blue Jays, 15-14, at Jeffrey Field in its season finale, helping the Lions cap off the year with a three-game winning streak.
