UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; May 31, 2007 - Senior infielder Matt Cavagnaro (Brightwaters, N.Y.) was named to the Big Ten All-Tournament team after he hit .391 (9-for-23) in Penn State??s five games at the Big Ten Tournament last week in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Brightwaters, N.Y. native becomes the first Penn State player named to the Big Ten All-Tournament team since 2000, when the trio of Chris Netwall, Eric Spadt and Michael Campo were named All-Tournament.
Cavagnaro was one of only two members of the All-Tournament team to come from a team other than Minnesota or Ohio State, which were the two teams to make the championship game. Cavagnaro hit in four of Penn State??s five games, recording multiple hits in all four of the games he hit in, and scored at least one run in four of the five games as well. He was also stellar in the field, recording 23 assists and 11 putouts as he took away several hits from opposing hitters with his range at second base.
With his outstanding tournament, Cavagnaro ended his season with 78 hits, which is now third all-time in Penn State single season history. Cavagnaro also recorded 183 defensive assists on the season, which is second all-time in single season history as he came up just seven assists shy of breaking the school record. His 390 career assists also rank him in the top ten on the career list. The second baseman is expected to be drafted in next week's MLB Amateur Draft.
