UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State women's volleyball junior middle hitter Christa Harmotto (Aliquippa, Pa.) has been named the Big Ten Player of the Week, conference officials announced today. It is the third career honor for Harmotto and brings Penn State's total Big Ten Player of the Week honors to 51 since joining the conference for the 1991 season.
Harmotto was a driving force behind third-ranked Penn State's two four-game wins over No. 4 Texas last weekend at Rec Hall. In the first match of the year on Friday, Harmotto fell just shy of her career high in kills, racking up 15 put-aways on a .545 hitting percentage while providing a match-high six blocks. The following night Harmotto again continued her strong play, posting 13 kills on .524 hitting with four blocks.
For the weekend, Harmotto averaged 3.50 kills per game on .535 hitting with 1.25 blocks per game.
Penn State heads to Nebraska next weekend, facing #14 Cal Poly on Friday, Aug. 31 at 4:30 p.m. CT in Lincoln before taking on the top-ranked Cornhuskers on Sunday, Sept. 2 in Omaha at 3:00 p.m. CT.
